BOOK EXCERPT:
A dusty plasma (or complex plasma) is a plasma (ionized gas) in which relatively massive particulates (dust grains) are embedded. Dusty plasmas occur widely in nature and show great industrial potential. This volume reports on the latest developments in dusty plasma physics, from astrophysical to space to laboratory environments. Theoretical and computer simulation advances cover topics such as linear instabilities, nonlinear wave phenomena, and plasma sheaths. Experimental results deal with exciting areas such as particle coagulation, plasma crystals, plasma voids, and microgravity experiments. Four comprehensive overview papers are presented on dusty plasmas in: astrophysics and cosmology, the solar system, and the ionosphere and its environment, as well as on the structure and dynamics of strongly non-ideal plasmas. In addition, eight topical reviews are included, as well as about 90 short research papers.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The 4th ICPDP conference was dedicated to the physics of dusty or complex plasmas. It focused on the phenomena related to the interaction of these particles with plasmas, such as transport processes, Coulomb crystal and liquid formation, void formation, self excited instabilities, wave propagation, nonlinear phenomena and also the nucleation and growth of dust particles in these plasmas.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Dusty plasmas are relevant to the understanding of astrophysical, space and laboratory phenomena. During the ICPDP5, the progress in observations, modeling and simulations of dusty plasma physics has been examined. This conference addressed a very broad range oftopics which are closely related through the underlying physics, including contributions from Fusion and Astrophysics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The volume illustrates the State of the art and new directions in plasma physics, space physics, and astrophysics. It covers several hot topics of interdisciplinary interest where progress is made by the use of joint expertise. It summarizes an unusually lively symposium that has gathered world experts with a broad spectrum of research interests. Interdisciplinary meetings at the border between plasma physics and astrophysics are becoming increasingly important. In the recent past, several proceedings volumes have been devoted to astrophysical plasmas. This volume has the unique feature of being professional but not specialized, because it covers an unusually broad spectrum of topics under the common theme of the study of complex and collective phenomena in macroscopic systems, from the scale of laboratory plasma experiments to the scale of the universe. Included are: - basic plasma processes - space plasmas, planetary plasmas, and the heliosphere - solar and stellar plasmas - plasmas around compact objects - plasmas in galaxies - plasmas in clusters of galaxies - cosmological plasmas - testing plasma astrophysics in the laboratory

BOOK EXCERPT:
This workshop was the first one in this series held since the announcement of the formation of cold anti-hydrogen by the ATHENA and ATRAP experiments. Research presented includes transport, collective modes, and the interplay between the two from both a particle and fluid perspective. This work is carried out in different geometries including cylindrical traps and toroidal systems. Research on cold anti-hydrogen is also represented, since accumulation of large numbers of antiprotons and positrons is a necessary precursor to recombination. Finally, several papers describing experiments on the physics of beams widens the scope to include beams and accelerators. The Workshop on Non-Neutral Plasma Physics brings together investigators from diverse areas whose research has the common feature of involving plasmas that have constituent particles with the same sign of charge.

BOOK EXCERPT:
All papers were peer reviewed. The importance of connecting astrophysical theory, simulations and laboratory experiments is enormous. In particular it is widely understood that laboratory experiments are the key ingredients for validating astrophysical codes. This understanding is particularly acute in the area of magneto-rotational instability (MRI) research. This book witnesses the vigorous discussions that groups of experimentalists and theorists had during the workshop, from "what would the ideal MRI experiment be like," to "can we understand the nonlinear saturation of the MRI?"

BOOK EXCERPT:
Magnetized plasmas in the universe exhibit complex dynamical behavior over a huge range of scales. The fundamental mechanisms of energy transport, redistribution and conversion occur at multiple scales. The driving mechanisms often include energy accumulation, free-energy-excited relaxation processes, dissipation and self-organization. The plasma processes associated with energy conversion, transport and self-organization, such as magnetic reconnection, instabilities, linear and nonlinear waves, wave-particle interactions, dynamo processes, turbulence, heating, diffusion and convection represent fundamental physical effects. They demonstrate similar dynamical behavior in near-Earth space, on the Sun, in the heliosphere and in astrophysical environments. 'Multi-scale Dynamical Processes in Space and Astrophysical Plasmas' presents the proceedings of the International Astrophysics Forum Alpbach 2011. The contributions discuss the latest advances in the exploration of dynamical behavior in space plasmas environments, including comprehensive approaches to theoretical, experimental and numerical aspects. The book will appeal to researchers and students in the fields of physics, space and astrophysics, solar physics, geophysics and planetary science.
