For early modern Europeans, the past was a measure of most things, good and bad. For that reason it was also hotly contested, manipulated, and far too important to be left to historians alone. The size of the workforce and the number of wage dependent people increased, due in large part to population growth, but also as a result of changes in the organization of work.
