This present study is the first in English of the theology of the German Lutheran theologian Georg Wobbermin (1869-1943), who has been called a "captain of the liberal rearguard." Widely read and discussed in his own lifetime, Wobbermin's theology fell into obscurity as dialectical theology rose to prominence in the years following the First World War. Faith at the Intersection of History and Experience presents the major themes of Wobbermin's theology, particularly his analysis of the relationship between faith and history and his development of a religio-psychological theological method that places faith at the intersection of history and experience. Wobbermin's critiques of recent and contemporary approaches to the problem of faith and history and his attention to theological method reveal a sustained effort to continue what he called the "Luther-Kant-Schleiermacher line" of Protestant theology. The consistent emphasis in Wobbermin's theology is on the systematic interrelation of objectivity and subjectivity, an approach he considered to be a faithful continuation of the Reformation, but one that invited conflict with the dialectical theologians, chiefly Karl Barth. Wobbermin's debates with Barth on issues of method reveal a vibrant and sophisticated liberal theology co-existing with the dialectical theology that is conventionally assumed to have eclipsed it over a decade earlier. Building on work that has been done primarily in German, this study of one of the "forgotten theologians" of the early twentieth century appears as more German, British, and American theologians and historians are returning to this period of theology with renewed interest and fresh questions, and it addresses an often neglected period of modern Protestant thought in histories currently available in English.

John von Neumann and Marshall Stone were two giants of Twentieth Century mathematics. In honor of the 100th anniversary of their births, a mathematical celebration was organized featuring developments in fields where both men were major influences. This volume contains articles from the AMS Special Session, Operator Algebras, Quantization and Noncommutative Geometry: A Centennial Celebration in Honor of John von Neumann and Marshall H. Stone. Papers range from expository and refereed and cover a broad range of mathematical topics reflecting the fundamental ideas of von Neumann and Stone. What is the church? What is its mission in the world? Modern Protestantism's inability to provide a clear answer to these seemingly simple questions has resulted in vast confusion amongst pastors about the nature of their calling and has left congregations languishing without a clear reason for existence. Many of the voices and allegiances competing for the churches' attention have rushed in to fill the void, with the result that the church in modernity has frequently found itself captive to the prevailing culture. Yet from within the belly of highly culturally accommodated churches, both the German pastor-theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the American theological ethicist Stanley Hauerwas were able to articulate compelling visions of churches freed from their cultural captivity in order to truly and freely serve God and neighbor. Against the complex and confusing backdrops of Nazi Germany and late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century America respectively, Bonhoeffer and Hauerwas sought to recover the ethical and political character of the Christian faith through recalling the church back to the christological center of its faith. Together they provide a rich set of complementary, and at times mutually correcting, resources for the contemporary church as it seeks to faithfully bear witness to Christ amidst the ruins of Christendom.

This edited volume moves beyond the traditional examination of the treaty ports of China and Japan as places of cultural interaction. It moves ‘beyond the Bund’, presenting instead the history of material culture, the everyday life of the residents of the treaty ports beyond the symbology of Shanghai's waterfront. Bringing for the first time together scholars of China and Japan, museum curators, legal, economic and architectural historians, it studies the treaty ports not only as sites of cultural exchange, but also as sites of social contestation, accommodation and mobility, covering topics as varied as day to day life itself, such as family, property and law, health and welfare, travel, visual culture and memory. The call of this volume is to peel the multiple layers of the encounter between East and West in the treaty ports of China and Japan.

Not many theologians have had as great an impact on the study of peace and violence as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was labeled an Enemy of the State and eventually executed in April 1945. In this book, Trey Palmisano examines the theological connection between peace and violence across a range of Bonhoeffer's writings, sermons, and letters. Despite the challenges Bonhoeffer experienced in his personal life and in the life of his country, Palmisano asserts that a strong consistency emerges in Bonhoeffer's approach to ethics that resonates in the positing of Christ as the center of all ethical discourse and orients one to the ever-present challenges of a changing world. Palmisano creates distance from former studies that sought to define Bonhoeffer as a committed pacifist, a situational pacifist, or one who compromised his values to accommodate an exception for violence. By prioritizing methodology as the key to interpreting Bonhoeffer's thought, Palmisano argues that the ethical dilemma thought to be caused by Bonhoeffer's actions is avoided. The result is one that creates an authentic ethical openness by responsiveness to Christ rather than Christian virtue, and frees the individual from redundancies of action derived from deeply embedded patterns of theological engagement.

Confidence in Life offers a theologically-robust evaluation of the good of procreation, which emerges out of both careful interactions with contemporary analytic philosophy and a reconstructed reading of Karl Barth's doctrine of (pro)creation. While analytic moral philosophy has rarely been brought into close proximity to Barth's work, the conjunction underscores the deep difficulty of accounting for procreation's value within non-theological frameworks, and helps clarify what is distinctive and valuable about Barth's own moral reasoning on this subject. Though primarily staged as an intervention in Protestant moral theology, Confidence in Life's rehabilitation of the Virgin Mary's role in Barth's thought has promise for an ecumenical retrieval of the good of procreating within the economy of redemption-and its retrieval of honour as an indispensable aspect of Barth's theology will be of interest to Barth scholars and moral theologians alike.

In this book, Daniel K. Miller articulates a new vision of human and animal relationships based on the foundational love ethic within Christianity. Framed around Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, Animal Ethics and Theology thoughtfully examines the shortcomings of utilitarian and rights-based approaches to animal ethics. By considering the question of animals within the Christian concept of neighbourly love, Miller provides an alternative narrative for understanding the complex relationships that humans have with other animals.
