I Am An Echo Chamber The Basis Of Tribalism

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Americans are becoming increasingly tribalistic. It's not just Republicans vs. Democrats, it's brown vs. white, college educated vs. blue collar folks, the coasts vs. the midwest, gay vs. straight, rich vs. poor, believers in science vs. non-believers, facts vs. fake news, sexual predators vs. me-too-ers, foreign businesses vs. American businesses, Trumpists vs. never Trumpers. Why?It's easy and convenient to blame President Trump, but he is more a catalyst than a cause of the problem. He is one of the factors that are outside of us as human beings, as is income inequality, immigration, racism and advancing technology. These exogenous causes of tribalism in their various forms occupy a huge slice of the daily news cycle. Most people, if presented with the phrase "echo chamber," will associate it with left- or right-leaning media networks (MSNBC and FOX respectively). Each side broadcasts news and opinions, over and over, that agrees with their slant, and ignores or underrepresents views that are opposed. And we humans not only passively inhale one-sided information, we actively seek out news which is consistent with what we believe and interact with people who agree with us, whether in real life or on social media. Time and repetition harden our views. But here's the wrinkle¿in general, how often do we change our minds about¿anything? Not often, and only with great difficulty. We hold beliefs that are extremely resistant to change, be they related to politics and religion, devotion to a sports team or musical genre, or even favorite cuisine or style of dress. The way we humans are wired, comprised of a nexus of beliefs or constructs, self-interest honed by evolution, and logical thinking, serve to make each of us fairly predictable and not very open to change. We are, each of us, our own unique one-off echo chamber.

Echo Chamber And Polarization In Social Media

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book addresses increasingly relevant social problems enabled by social media through the lens of system science research and modeling. Instead of evaluating existing patterns from existing social media data, the book focuses on exploring the possibility of various policies. Specifically, it provides fresh insight into the political echo chamber and polarization in social media using agent-based modeling and scenario analysis. The book contains a practical framework to study the factors influencing echo chambers and polarization formation occurring in social media communication. By modeling individual social media users' information consumption, the influence of various behaviors and policies are captured as macro-phenomena. The book also introduces a comprehensive agent-based reinterpretation of the Zaller model, a classic in public opinion research. In addition, the book demonstrates two real-life applications of the model using empirical observations: resolving the conflicting observations of the online echo chamber effect, and modeling the influence of vaccine-related Facebook pages on users’ opinions about vaccination.

Echo Chamber

BOOK EXCERPT:

Kathleen Hall Jamieson and Joseph Cappella-two of the nation's foremost experts on politics and media-offers a searching analysis of the conservative media establishment, from talk radio to Fox News to the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal. Echo Chamber is the first serious account of how the conservative media arose, what it consists of, and how it operates. Jamieson and Cappella find that Limbaugh, Fox News, and The Wall Street Journal opinion pages create a self-protective enclave for conservatives, shielding them from other information sources and promoting highly negative views toward conservatism's political opponents. A thoughtful and incisive study, Echo Chamber offers the most authoritative and insightful account of this revolutionary phenomenon and its indelible effect on the American political landscape.

Digital Classics Outside The Echo Chamber

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Edited by organisers of “Digital Classicist” seminars in London and Berlin, this volume explores the impact of computational approaches to the study of antiquity on audiences other than the scholars who conventionally publish it. In addition to colleagues in classics and digital humanities, the eleven chapters herein concern and are addressed to students, heritage professionals and “citizen scientists”. Each chapter is a scholarly contribution, presenting research questions in the classics, digital humanities or, in many cases, both. They are all also examples of work within one of the most important areas of academia today: scholarly research and outputs that engage with collaborators and audiences not only including our colleagues, but also students, academics in different fields including the hard sciences, professionals and the broader public. Collaboration and scholarly interaction, particularly with better-funded and more technically advanced disciplines, is essential to digital humanities and perhaps even more so to digital classics. The international perspectives on these issues are especially valuable in an increasingly connected, institutionally and administratively diverse world. This book addresses the broad range of issues scholars and practitioners face in engaging with students, professionals and the public, in accessible and valuable chapters from authors of many backgrounds and areas of expertise, including language and linguistics, history, archaeology and architecture. This collection will be of interest to teachers, scientists, cultural heritage professionals, linguists and enthusiasts of history and antiquity.

Social Virtue Epistemology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This collection of 19 chapters, all appearing in print here for the first time and written by an international team of established and emerging scholars, explores the place of intellectual virtues and vices in a social world. Relevant virtues include open-mindedness, curiosity, intellectual courage, diligence in inquiry, and the like. Relevant vices include dogmatism, need for immediate certainty, and gullibility and the like. The chapters are divided into four key sections: Foundational Issues; Individual Virtues; Collective Virtues; and Methods and Measurements. And the chapters explore the most salient questions in this areas of research, including: How are individual intellectual virtues and vices affected by their social contexts? Does being in touch with other open-minded people make us more open-minded? Conversely, does connection to other dogmatic people make us more dogmatic? Can groups possess virtues and vices distinct from those of their members? For instance, could a group of dogmatic individuals operate in an open-minded way despite the vices of its members? Each chapter receives commentary from two other authors in the volume, and each original author then replies to these commentaries. Together, the authors form part of a collective conversation about how we can know about what we know. In so doing, they not only theorize but enact social virtue epistemology.
