BOOK EXCERPT:

What does it take to be a student-athlete at Notre Dame? Sports fans may have an idea of what it takes to play football at a Division I college: the training, the discipline, the pain, the motivation. But most of us have no idea what it takes to be a successful student-athlete at a top academic institution such as Notre Dame. In “The Men We Became: More Echoes From the End Zone,” the follow up to Lisa Kelly’s first book “Echoes From the End Zone: The Men We Became;” Lisa details what it takes to be a successful student-athlete at Notre Dame: the dedication, determination and drive that Our Lady’s student-athletes need to find success both on and off the field. She tells the stories of another group of Notre Dame football players including: • The lessons they learned in college, and how those lessons changed their lives via the Notre Dame Value Stream • Their years at Notre Dame • The end of their football careers • The new careers and dreams they followed after football "The profiles of the Notre Dame men presented in this book touch on the significant impact the University played in the shaping of these individuals after they left . Lisa does a masterful job of extracting the essence of what make Notre Dame men special. I am proud of the legacy I was fortunate enough to be a part of and grateful to Lisa for doing such a remarkable job in telling our stories.” ~Reggie Brooks “The men featured in this book are special individuals and represent all that is great about Notre Dame. These men are significant and they have strived each day to make an impact and difference in all things that they touch. They were - and as far as I’m concerned remain - Notre Dame student-athletes and I’m proud to have been a part of their lives. Lisa, thank you for your work and sharing with the Notre Dame Family what you so appropriately have named, “The Men We Became: More Echoes From the End Zone.” ~ Lou Holtz

The Odyssey Of Echo Company

BOOK EXCERPT:

SELECTED BY MILITARY TIMES AS A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR * SELECTED BY THE SOCIETY OF MIDLAND AUTHORS’ AS THE BEST NONFICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR The New York Times bestselling author of In Harm’s Way and Horse Soldiers shares the powerful account of an American army platoon fighting for survival during the Vietnam War in “an important book….not just a battle story—it’s also about the home front” (The Today show). On January 31, 1968, as many as 100,000 guerilla fighters and soldiers in the North Vietnamese Army attacked thirty-six cities throughout South Vietnam, hoping to dislodge American forces during one of the vital turning points of the Vietnam War. Alongside other young American soldiers in an Army reconnaissance platoon (Echo Company, 1/501) of the 101st Airborne Division, Stanley Parker, the nineteen-year-old son of a Texan ironworker, was suddenly thrust into savage combat, having been in-country only a few weeks. As Stan and his platoon-mates, many of whom had enlisted in the Army, eager to become paratroopers, moved from hot zone to hot zone, the extreme physical and mental stresses of Echo Company’s day-to-day existence, involving ambushes and attacks, grueling machine-gun battles, and impossibly dangerous rescues of wounded comrades, pushed them all to their limits and forged them into a lifelong brotherhood. The war became their fight for survival. When they came home, some encountered a bitterly divided country that didn’t understand what they had survived. Returning to the small farms, beach towns, and big cities where they grew up, many of the men in the platoon fell silent, knowing that few of their countrymen wanted to hear the stories they lived to tell—until now. Based on interviews, personal letters, and Army after-action reports, The Odyssey of Echo Company recounts the searing tale of wartime service and homecoming of ordinary young American men in an extraordinary time and confirms Doug Stanton’s prominence as an unparalleled storyteller of our age.

Sounds From The Valley

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

There is a frustration while researching and writing history. The things one really wants to know about cannot usually be found. Will Durant wrote thus in the Story of Civilization series: Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people killing, stealing, shouting, and doing things historians usually record while, on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry, whittle statues. The story of civilization is the story of what happens on the banks. You will find some interesting events in this history of the UC/UTC band, but you will not find everything. You will not find the name of the first song the University of Chattanooga band played, how Professor Blinn Owen felt about stepping down as the first dean of the department of music when it merged with the Cadek Conservatory, or what the reaction of the crowd was when the band played a Spanish tune for the first time in the late sixties. These are the kind of events and happenings that one would like to know, especially for the early years of the university band. This is not to be, however. Alas, we will have to settle for what witnesses selected to tell us, for it is unlikely that they realized they were historians at the time they recorded it!
