This book presents carefully selected chapters from the proceedings of the 6th International Scientific Conference on Business and Economics (ISCBE),Tetovo, North Macedonia, which took place in May 2023. Cabo Verde’s medium-term outlook is positive, supported by the authorities’ policy package to respond to the evolving impacts of the war in Ukraine and their commitments to the recovery process and the ECF in a challenging environment. The economy rebounded strongly in 2022 with GDP growth of 17.7 percent, although average inflation increased to 7.9 percent at end-December 2022 driven by higher food, electricity, gas, and transportation costs. The new Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development 2022-2026 (PEDS II) sets the reform agenda to overcome challenges to sustainable development. The economy remains vulnerable to internal and external risks. In this context, the ECF will support the authorities’ plans towards economic and social progress, as well as the environmental challenges facing the country in its development process, while seeking to reduce debt levels and mitigate risks.

Latin America and the Caribbean needs an ambitious and comprehensive investment agenda to embark on a stronger and more sustainable development trajectory. The 16th edition of the Latin American Economic Outlook proposes ways to make this possible through co-ordinated actions by policy makers, the private sector and international partners.

The 2012 Article IV Report on Ireland’s economy under the Extended Arrangement analyzes the banking crisis and Irish authorities’ steadfast efforts to restore stability. Public debt has been high, and the banking system has not served the financial needs of both households and the job-intensive small and medium enterprises (SME) sector. The crisis also created uncertainty for exports and investments. The Executive Board has identified steps needed to underpin a sustained economic recovery. Sustained financial sector reforms are recommended to restore sound credit and revive domestic demand.

As in the past, the Dominican Republic’s dynamic economy continued to show remarkable resilience to shocks, rebounding strongly from the impact of the pandemic. Sound policies, a nimble vaccination campaign and a well-attuned reopening—including international travel—allowed the economy to make the most of the global rebound. The recovery has been broad based; GDP was about 5 percent above pre-pandemic levels as of end-2021. The country maintained sound market access and benefitted from Fund support through the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI).

Political risks appear to have subsided with the completion of legislative and local elections in October. The economy is slowly recovering, fiscal consolidation has continued, inflation has remained low, and the trade balance has improved. The recovery is expected to firm up in 2019 and the medium-term outlook is still promising, although risks remain mostly tilted to the downside.

The U.K. economy is on the mend, but crisis-related scars still need healing. A highly accommodative monetary stance is required to offset the contractionary impulse from fiscal policy and keep inflation close to target. Risks to this scenario are substantial, and policies will need to adapt if they materialize. The government should continue to fortify fiscal institutions. Efforts should continue to strengthen financial sector health.

Context and outlook. Economic growth is recovering from the impact of the unfavorable global economic environment and domestic factors. Growth is expected to continue strengthening, supported by improvements in the business environment and subsiding global commodity prices. Inflation is projected to remain within the central bank’s target range. Growth-friendly fiscal consolidation is underway, anchored by the ECF arrangement, and the current account deficit is narrowing reflecting fiscal consolidation, easing commodity prices, and tight external financing conditions. The medium-term outlook is positive contingent on implementation of the authorities’ reform agenda, anchored by the ECF arrangement. Climate change poses a major threat, as Tanzania is highly vulnerable but not well-prepared to address the effects of climate change.
