It examines the implications of the implementation of reforms in English language education for experimental-urban schools in the People’s Republic of China. Pérez-Milans sheds light on how national, linguistic, and cultural ideologies linked to modernization are being institutionally (re)produced, legitimated, and inter-personally negotiated through everyday practice in the current context of Chinese educational reforms. He places special emphasis on those reforms regarding English language education, with respect to the economic processes of globalization that are shaping (and being shaped by) the contemporary Chinese nation-state. In particular, the book analyzes the processes of institutional categorization of the "good experimental school", the "good student", and the "appropriate knowledge" that emerge from the daily discursive organization of those schools, with special attention to the related contradictions, uncertainties and dilemmas. Thus, it provides an account of the on-going cultural processes of change faced by contemporary Chinese educational institutions under conditions of late modernity. This study examines the history of modern education in Republican China and analyzes its interaction with China's traditional educational heritage. In the first decade of the 20th century, the Chinese government introduced a new, national system of education, hoping that doing so would produce for China the human resources it needed to save itself from foreign encroachment. The new structure, however, was designed in accordance to foreign models that were hardly suited to conditions in China, and it had to compete with a strong indigenous educational tradition that was intimately associated with important features of Chinese social structure. Ultimately, when evaluated in the reformers' own hopes and expectations the new schools were a failure. Often referred to as the foreign eight-legged essay, they contributed to the destruction of a system of schooling that had helped to integrate traditional Chinese society by providing, at minimum, an avenue for upward mobility that most people considered fair and an introduction to an intellectual and literary heritage that all Chinese could claim as their own. considered alien, and a new set of neither institutions that produced the skilled manpower that the reformers sought nor the channel for upward mobility that elite aspirants wanted. By reforming the schools, instead of saving China, the reformers contributed to the disintegration for which the Republican Period is aptly remembered.

This book reconstructs civic education and citizenship training in secondary schools in the lower Yangzi region during the Republican era. It analyzes how students used the tools of civic education to make themselves into young citizens, and explores the complex social and political effects of educated youths' civic action.

The themes of the book include challenges to knowledge in the late modern era; Eastern contributions to scientific knowledge; knowledge transfer across regions and civilizations; indigenous knowledge and modern education; and past and present influences from China.

Chinese migration to Tibet and other border areas--now within the People's Republic of China--has long been a politically sensitive issue. As part of an ongoing process of internal colonization, migrations to minority areas have been, with few exceptions, directly organized by the government or driven by economic motives. Dramatic demographic and economic changes, often spearheaded not by local inhabitants but by Han Chinese immigrants have been the result. Frontier People shows how the Han themselves have been directly involved in the process of transformation within these areas where they have settled. Their perceptions of the minority natives, their "old home," other immigrants, and their own role in the areas are examined in relation to the official discourse on the migrations. This study contests conventional ways of presenting Han immigrants in minority areas as a homogeneous group of colonizers with shared identification, equal class status, and access to power. Based on extensive fieldwork in two local areas, Frontier People demonstrates that the category of "Han immigrants" is profoundly fragmented in terms of generation, ethnic identification, migration history, class, and economic activity. In this respect, the book makes an invaluable contribution to the literature on colonizers--a diverse group of people with equally diverse perceptions of the colonial project in which they play an integral part.
