Una excelente novela histórica del autor del celebérrimo El prisionero de Zenda. Tan sólo esa última obra juvenil (El prisionero de Zenda) se reimprime continuamente en España, estando olvidadas otras suyas de más enjundia, como este El espejo del rey, que el novelista tenía por la mejor suya. Anthony Hope Nació el 9 de febrero de 1863 en Londres. Estudió en la Universidad de Cambridge y ejerció la abogacía de 1887 a 1894. Su primera obra fue A Man of Mark (1890). Dedicó toda su vida a la actividad de escritor, que se vio coronada por un gran éxito y le valió, entre otros honores, la concesión del título nobiliario de Sir en 1918. Pronto se hizo famoso con la publicación, en 1894, de El prisionero de Zenda, que gozó de un inmenso favor popular. Y pocas semanas después de la publicación de tal obra, Anthony Hope logró renovar su extraordinario éxito con The Dolly Dialogues Algunas de sus obras fueron llevadas al cine. Falleció en 1933.

In the last decades, historians and art historians have created an active historiographical debate about one of the most fascinating and studied iconographic themes of the Middle Ages: the royal divine coronation. Indeed, in the specific case of some Ottonian and Salian illuminations, it has been proposed that their function was not only political or to legitimize power, as traditionally suggested (Herrscherbilder), but also liturgical and religious (Memorialbilder). This has led to a complete rethinking of the meaning of this iconographic theme: the divine coronation of the king would not symbolically allude to his earthly power but to the wholly devotional hope of receiving the crown of eternal life in the afterlife. If this academic debate has been concentrated, above all, on Ottonian and Salian royal images, this Special Issue of Arts would like to deal with this topic by stimulating the analysis of royal divine coronation and blessing scenes in religious and liturgical context (mosaics, frescos, or paintings placed in cathedrals or monastic churches and illuminations of liturgical texts) with a wider geographical and temporal setting; that is, the European and Mediterranean kingdoms in the period from the 12th to the 15th centuries.

La desilusión de la imagen. Arqueología, cuerpo(s) y mirada(s), plantea que las imágenes son vínculos entre distintas épocas y culturas, son síntomas e indicios que dejan huellas en el imaginario cultural. Son la elegíaca memoria como musa que deambula por los tiempos pero fuera de los tiempos (genealogía) o, en otros términos, las imágenes son Mnemosyne, es decir, la musa de todas las musas. Una arqueología de la imagen, implica considerar a la imagen desde la intermedialidad (entre-medios), los cuerpos y las miradas. Concebirla desde una crítica de la cultura en una contemporaneidad atravesada por la crisis. La pregunta ¿qué son las imágenes? que se formula desde la debilidad de cierta inocencia de la escritura, adquiere toda su dimensión desde el momento en que se confunde imagen con visualidad o imagen con medios audiovisuales, dejando por el camino todos los restos de imágenes que no son visuales. Aún más, ese debate se torna más complejo, cuando en su trasfondo está la «memoria» del holocausto (o de los holocaustos); las imágenes de la crisis política, económica y social o los miles de refugiados, en la paradigmática imagen de un niño muerto en la playa, deambulando por geografías europeas. La imagen es, en efecto, «nómada», viaja por territorios y culturas. Entonces, la inocencia de la pregunta se transforma en la imagen frágil de los que no tienen imagen. «La propuesta de Víctor Silva Echeto, es una de las mejor articuladas que conozco para pensar posibles alternativas a la situación de impasse a que parece abocarnos el mundo contemporáneo.» JENARO TALENS (escritor).

Christian-Muslim Relations, a Bibliographical History 9 (CMR 9) covering Western and Southern Europe in the period 1600-1700 is a further volume in a general history of relations between the two faiths from the seventh century to the early 20th century. The expulsion of the Moriscos from Spain (1609-1614) represents an important episode of ethnic, political and religious cleansing which affected about 300,000 persons. The controversial measure was legimitized by an ideology of religious and political unity that served to defend the expulsion of them all, crypto-Muslims and sincere converts to Christianity alike. The first part focuses on the decision to expel the Moriscos, its historical context and the role of such institutions as the Vatican and the religious orders, and nations such as France, Italy, the Dutch Republic, Morocco and the Ottoman Empire. The second part studies the aftermath of the expulsion, the forced migrations, settlement and Diaspora of the Moriscos, comparing their vicissitudes with that of the Jewish conversos. National studies have demonstrated their inability to correctly understand global phenomena, and the way in which they affect societies. This chronologically ambitious book investigates methodological and theoretical issues from Roman times to the present, in terms of globalization. In this context, one of the most relevant parameters of change emerges: the itinerancy of culture and knowledge. Therefore, this volume argues that itinerant agents carry with them cultural baggage, transporting and transmitting it to other spaces. In this way, interconnection begins, producing active changes in global history and visual culture. Contributions to this book focus on comparative studies, the evolution of global phenomena, historical processes in their diachrony, regional studies, changing economies, cultural continuities, and methodological questions on globalization, among others. The Golden Age of Spanish drama extends from the close of the 15th century to the death of Calderón in 1681. During that time, the humanists, as dramatists, followed Italy's artistic awakening direction, and imitated Classical drama. With originality and dreams of greatness, they subverted the nature of tragedy; modified the approach of Comedy and invented the New Play, the Comedia Nueva. In it the poet-dramatists introduced important modificaitons of realism, included imagined reality, Christian symbolism and theatricality, as artistic truth. They elaborate all kinds of syntheses. For this reason, the Spanish Golden Age theater can be viewed as part of a tradition that includes the Greco-Roman comedy and tragedy, Christian tragedy, and the authentic national literary and dramatic tendencies. The entries in this reference book explore the fascinating history of the Golden Age of Spanish drama. The volume begins with an introductory overview of the literary, cultural, and historical contexts that shaped dramatic writing of the period. The book then presents alphabetically arranged essays for nineteen significant Spanish dramatists of the Golden Age. Each essay is written by an expert contributor and includes biographical information, an analysis and evaluation of major works, a discussion of critical response to the plays, and an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The volume closes with a selected general bibliography of central critical studies of Golden Age Spanish drama.
