Elucidating Essay Poetry

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Essay poetry is only one variation among many forms of poetry that already exist and which will exist in the future. I does not pretend or claim to be superior or inferior to other forms of poetry. It also does not purport to either dominate or homogenize poetry. It is just one rose from the exuberant garden of Eden, which is filled with many other types of flowers. It is just one deer of a certain species that dwells among many other kinds of wildlife. It is only one color, orange, among a rainbow, which is enriched by a variety of other colors.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The maintext in the present volume has beenconstructed out of passages found scattered aboutin thirty-five years of Alfred Schutz's writings, and it has been constructed by following a pageof notes for a lecture that he gave in 1955 under the title "Sociological Aspect of Literature. " The result can be considered the substance of Schutz's contribution to the theory of literature. More detail about how this construction has beenperformed is offered in the Editor's Introduction. The complementary essays areby scholars from Germany, Japan, andthe United States , from several generations, and from the disciplines of anthropology, philosophy, and sociology. These researchers were invited to reflect in their own perspectives on the main text and in relation to matters referred to within and beyond it. Draftversions of most of these complementary essays were presented for critical discussion in a research symposium held at the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science of theNewSchool for Social Research on April28-29, 1995 underthe sponsorship of The Center for Advanced Research in Phenomen ology, Inc. , Florida Atlantic University; The Department of Philosophy of The Graduate Faculty of the New School, Richard 1. Bernstein, Chair; and Evelyn and George Schutz, the philosopher's children. Revised versions of these presentations and also several essays subsequently recruited are offered to begin yet another stagein thehistory of scholarship on Schutz and the phenomenological research inspired by him. The Cultural Cold War And The Global South

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume investigates the cultural sites where the global Cold War played out. It brings to view unpredictable encounters that arose as writers, artists, filmmakers, and intellectuals from or aligned with the Third World navigated the ideological and material constraints set by superpowers and emerging regional powers. Often these encounters generated communitas and solidarity, while at times they fed old and new conflicts. Pushing forward recent scholarship that tracks the Cold War in the Global South and draws on postcolonial approaches, our contributors use archival, secondary, and ethnographic sources to trace the afterlives and memories of key figures and to explore meetings that performed cultural diplomacy. Our focus on sites of encounter or exchange underscores the situated, interpersonal, and embodied dimensions through which much of the cultural Cold War was experienced. While the global conflict divided citizens along ideological fault lines, it also linked people through circulating media—novels, film, posters, journals, and theatre—and multinational conferences that brought artists, intellectuals, and political activists together. Such contacts introduced new axes of solidarity and hierarchies of exclusion. Examining these connections and disjunctures, this new and necessary mapping of the cultural Cold War highlights under-addressed locations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Festivals Of Interpretation

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book engages and clarifies concepts crucial to Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, including the concepts of effective-history, tradition, dialogue, and language. Festivals of Interpretation exhibits the universal scope of hermeneutics. The authors respond to three questions often raised about Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics. Part One takes up the question of how Gadamer understands truth. It discusses how hermeneutical truth relates to methods, how truth may be thought to be historically conditioned without at the same time being relative, and how a truthful interpretation can produce a new understanding while simultaneously remaining faithful to the text. Part Two brings out the political, legal, and social relevance of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics by focusing on the role interpretation plays in times of political crisis, of disputes in Constitutional law, of changing ideas of societal needs such as health care, and of increased technological control of public opinion. The last question often asked about Gadamer's work concerns its relation to poetry. Part Three treats the challenge posed to philosophy by poetry in general and particularly by the poetry of Paul Celan as well as questions raised recently by Jacques Derrida about different ways of thinking about interpretation and text.

Literature And Society In Imperial Russia 1800 1914

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Ranging in topic from general discussions of literary theory to close readings of well known literary works, these nine papers address nearly every literary movement in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Russia, and a number of major writers, including Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, and Dostoevsky. Four kinds of issues are addressed: theoretical problems in the relationship of literature and society, the reading public, the rhetoric and ideologies of writers and critics, and the relationship between fictional and social worlds. In confronting some of the ways in which the social and literary aspects of Russian culture have imposed themselves upon each other, this volume seeks an approach to Russian literature that neglects neither the dynamics of social interaction nor the forms and traditions of literature. The contributors are Robert L. Belknap, Jeffrey Brooks, Edward J. Brown, Donald Fanger, Jean Franco, Robert Louis Jackson, Hugh McLean, Victor Ripp, and William Mills Todd III.
