Empirical Evidence On The Macroeconomic Effects Of Eu Cohesion Policy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Philipp Mohl evaluates the macroeconomic effects of EU Cohesion Policy with the help of empirical methods. His findings indicate that in particular the part of EU Cohesion Policy which is spent for the poorest regions (the so-called Objective 1 funding) has a positive and statistically significant impact on economic growth. Moreover, the employment effects of EU Cohesion Policy seem to be conditional on the educational attainment, i.e., in particular regions with a high share of high-skilled population tend to benefit from EU funds. Finally, the author does not find evidence that EU funds significantly increase public investment in the EU countries, which points to a crowding out of national investment. Overall, the gained insights contribute to a more profound understanding of the macroeconomic effects of EU Cohesion Policy, which is essential to design an effective and efficient EU spending system.

Sustainable Human Nature Relations

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book addresses sustainability thinking and the bigger picture, by taking into consideration how and from where contemporary schools of thought emerged approximately a quarter-century ago. Evidence from the literature illustrates a number of key concepts and techniques that have been tested and continue to be tested, within various multi-disciplinary fields, on societal functionality. Research into sustainable societies needs to be sound, ethical, and creative. A cross-sectoral, interdisciplinary examination of challenges and strategies is used to interlink sustainability thinking and human-nature relations. With an ever-growing number of people now concentrated within urban areas, providing not only environmental quality and livable space, but also security and resilient urban systems, is becoming increasingly important. This urbanization trend has overlapped with environmental degradation, consumption of natural resources, habitat loss, and overall ecosystem change. Consequently, the goal is for cleaner, safer societies – with higher standards of living – to excel in support of current and future generational communities. The book tackles these challenges by integrating environmental scholarship, economic evaluation, and urban strategies under one umbrella of thought. The relational paradigms presented include examples that correlate developed and developing countries, socioeconomics and community development, and governance of knowledge and education. As such, the book argues, furthering of knowhow should be accessible and shared in order to achieve maximum innovation and benefit. Sustainability thinking, after all, is a metric for intrinsic human-nature relations in terms of past performance, present development, and future goals. This book discusses this metric and offers novel approaches to growing societies and what we can do next.

Is Europe Good For You

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Throughout the history of European integration, economic wealth has increased to the benefit of citizens in the European Union (EU). However, inequalities in well-being persist within and between Europe’s regions, undermining the legitimacy of the EU in the eyes of citizens. This book investigates how the EU can use its regional funding programmes in ways that increase citizen well-being. The book shows that while EU social investments improve labour market performance in rich regions, they exacerbate income inequality in poor regions. Based on this insight, the book presents a theory on the conditions under which EU funding will enhance well-being. Crucially, it argues the case for enhancing the inclusivity of EU growth, which yields the promise of a more legitimate and stronger union.

Unity In Diversity

BOOK EXCERPT:

The book was inspired by the Erasmus+ Project "Border Education - Space, Memory and Reflections on Transculturality." By adopting an inter-disciplinary approach sensitive to the role of memory in 'bordering' processes, the included essays examine a range of those processes affecting the lives of people in different parts of Europe. The authors call upon a range of 'border narratives' and 'border' representations in cultural media, museum spaces, textbooks, the lecture theatre and the classroom to offer fresh perspectives on border issues drawn from Germany, France, Northern Ireland, Sweden, and Slovenia. Regional Disparities And Growth In The European Union

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Publikationssprache: Englisch

Eu Cohesion Policy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.tandfebooks.com/doi/view/10.4324/9781315401867, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 3.0 license. This book brings together academics, members of European institutions, and regional and national level policymakers in order to assess the performance and direction of EU Cohesion policy against the background of the most significant reforms to the policy in a generation. Responding to past criticisms of the effectiveness of the policy, the policy changes introduced in 2013 have aligned European Structural and Investment Funds with the Europe 2020 strategy and introduced measures to improve strategic coherence, performance and integrated development. EU Cohesion Policy: Reassessing performance and direction argues that policy can only be successfully developed and implemented if there is input from both academics and practitioners. The chapters in the book address four important issues: the effectiveness and impact of Cohesion policy at European, national and regional levels; the contribution of Cohesion policy to the Europe 2020 strategy of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth; the importance of quality of government and administrative capacity for the effective management of the Funds; and the inter-relationships between institutions, territory and place-based policies. The volume will be an invaluable resource to students, academics and policymakers across economics, regional studies, European studies and international relations.

Territorial Impact Assessment

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents a comprehensive debate and analysis of existing Territorial Impact Assessment (TIA) methodologies, designed under the auspices of the ESPON programme since the mid-2000s. This is intended to serve as a TIA handbook for the reader, to better understand the main differences, advantages and shortcomings of each presented TIA methodology. It also serves as a manual for professors and students in the field of policy evaluation, and territorial analysis, as it presents concrete examples of the implementation of each TIA methodology, their formulas and intrinsic evaluation elements. The purpose of policy evaluation methodologies is to check the main effects of private and public investments, in order to report back to policymakers and citizens on their efficiency and effectiveness. Over the past decades, both in Europe and worldwide, there has been an increasingly awareness of the need to implement/reinforce policy evaluation practices, at all territorial levels. At the same time, it has become widely accepted that many policy interventions produce impacts in more than one dimensions of territorial development. In this context, the use of a holistic and territorial approach for policy impact assessment evaluation has rapidly been adopted by the European Commission as a mainstream policy evaluation procedure.

Knowledge Cohesion

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Research collaboration plays a pivotal role in not only disseminating existing knowledge but also catalyzing the generation of novel insights. This book delves into the benefits that arise from research collaborations, shedding light on their multifaceted impacts. It serves as a pioneering exploration into the nexus of collaboration, knowledge convergence, and knowledge cohesion, drawing extensively from the rich literature on the EU's cohesion policy and collaboration-induced knowledge diffusion. Firstly, Knowledge Cohesion: Uniting Europe Through Research Networks unravels the nuanced interplay among collaboration, knowledge convergence, and knowledge cohesion. Secondly, it carves out clear distinctions between the realms of convergence and cohesion. Lastly, it unveils an empirical framework, offering tools for quantifying and analysing knowledge cohesion. These contributions culminate in the conceptualisation of knowledge cohesion, enriching our understanding of how collaborative research profoundly impacts the advancement of knowledge. The empirical analyses show that while the research collaboration network indicates knowledge convergence, there is no evidence for knowledge cohesion in Europe. This book stands as a resource for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners alike, inviting them to explore the nuanced interplay of research collaboration and knowledge dynamics, while presenting knowledge cohesion as a new concept.
