This book is based on a fieldwork intensive, EU funded project, aimed at sustaining the empowerment processes of career guidance practitioners by developing their awareness and use of their individual, organizational and networking resources. The field work activity was carried out in three different national contexts: Italy, Bulgaria and Switzerland, and based on a creative methodological approach called Participative and Appreciative Action and Reflection (PAAR). The contributions cover a wide range of intertwined subjects. These include (a) deep reflection on life long career guidance (LLCG) systems and processes in the three national contexts involved, (b) the challenges of managing PAAR projects in organisations (c) the role of a participative and appreciative approaches in facilitating a positive shift from professionals inside welfare state institutions, to a more counselling oriented mission (d) how to build up an appreciative memory that is a way of representing experience and creating space for relationships so that they remain stable over time (e) reflection on what may happen to learning processes if the contexts in which the empowerment practices are implemented happen through a virtual environment such as a blog or a social network. The Editors are all experienced researchers and practitioners working if the field of facilitation, life long career guidance, counselling, reflective learning and social innovation. As moral educators we are more used to teaching others and researching their learning and moral development than reflecting on and writing formally about our own moral learning. We are not just professionals with an interest and supposedly some expertise in morality and education, we also have gendered and culturally differentiated personal and professional lives, in which there are moral issues, puzzles, and conflicts. We are situated in diverse political and institutional contexts whilst participating in an interdisciplinary professional field and interacting in an increasingly globalised world. How do we integrate the personal, professional and political in our moral learning? In this book celebrating the Journal of Moral Education’s 40th anniversary, 15 invited contributors, at different stages in their careers, from a range of disciplinary and cultural backgrounds, and from around the world, offer their academic, analytical and autobiographical reflections. Through their stories, narratives, analyses, questions and concerns, and across many diverse topics central to moral education, we see how they each confront their own moral learning—personally, professionally, and politically. This book offers insights from formative experiences and ongoing issues and challenges to suggest how all educators might take more account of the interrelation of the personal, professional and political in moral teaching and learning. In a globalized world characterized by transnational migration flows as an inevitable consequence of the increased mobility of individuals, coping with differences and with cultural discontinuity has become the main challenge in the education and training sector at all levels. This book is addressed to professionals in vocational education and training in an attempt to provide suggestions on innovative methods and intercultural approaches for inclusive, continuous education. Starting from the achievements of the I-VET European project, led by an international consortium of Universities and training organizations, the book traces the broad, multi-disciplinary epistemological framework underlying the proposed innovative methodology, based on experiential learning and reflective practice and the didactic choices piloted with a group of VET teachers and trainers. The focus is intercultural competence achieved through a situated and contextualized exercise of awareness about the specific situations in which differences emerge, and mutual adjustment between different frameworks, in full accordance with the constructionist approach to social interaction at the basis of the whole study.
