BOOK EXCERPT:
Endothelium and Cardiovascular Diseases: Vascular Biology and Clinical Syndromes provides an in-depth examination of the role of endothelium and endothelial dysfunction in normal vascular function, and in a broad spectrum of clinical syndromes, from atherosclerosis, to cognitive disturbances and eclampsia. The endothelium is a major participant in the pathophysiology of diseases, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes and hypertension, and these entities are responsible for the largest part of cardiovascular mortality and morbidly. Over the last decade major new discoveries and concepts involving the endothelium have come to light. This important reference collects this data in an easy to reference resource. Written by known experts, and covering all aspects of endothelial function in health and disease, this reference represents an assembly of recent knowledge that is essential to both basic investigators and clinicians. - Provides a complete overview of endothelial function in health and diseases, along with an assessment of new information - Includes coverage of groundbreaking areas, including the artificial LDL particle, the development of a new anti-erectile dysfunction agent, a vaccine for atherosclerosis, coronary calcification associated with red wine, and the interplay of endoplasmic reticulum/oxidative stress - Explores the genetic features of endothelium and the interaction between basic knowledge and clinical syndromes

BOOK EXCERPT:
Chronic oxidative stress is associated with the aging process and often leads to the development of disorders such as cancer and arterial disease. Cardiovascular conditions in which oxidation damage has been strongly implicated include atherosclerosis, myocardial ischemia and reperfusion, coronary restenosis, diabetes mellitus, and congestive heart failure. Antioxidants and Cardiovascular Disease, Second Edition covers three major topics: 1) the first seven chapters review the oxidative modifcation hypothesis and its close relationship to lipid metabolism and to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis; 2) the next four chapters describe the different compounds, nutrients and supplements with antioxidant properties and their mechanisms of action; 3) and finallly, the last ten chapters discuss the potential benefits of antioxidants in overall cardiovascular prevention, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemias, and in the treatment and prevention of specific conditions such as chronic coronary artery disease, restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention, and chronic heart failure. Antioxidants and Cardiovascular Disease, Second Edition is written by recognized experts in the fields of atherosclerosis, heart failure and antioxidants. It should be of interest to medical students and fellows, researchers, and practicing physicians. There has been rapid progress in our knowledge in this field during the last two to three years. Thus the current reedition appears timely. For instance, this second edition captures several recently reported and published clinical trials as welll as new information on diabetic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Impact of Nutrition and Statins on Cardiovascular Diseases presents a summary of the background information and published research on the role of food in inhibiting the development of cardiovascular diseases. Written from a food science, food chemistry, and food biochemistry perspective, the book provides insights on the origin of cardiovascular diseases, an analysis of statin therapy, their side effects, and the role of dietary intervention as an alternative solution to preventing cardiovascular diseases. It focuses on the efficacy of nutrition and statins to address inflammation and inhibit the onset of disease, while also providing nutrition information and suggested dietary interventions. - Includes a bioscience approach that focuses on inflammation and revisits the lipid hypothesis - Presents the view that nutritional interventions have considerable value, not only for reducing cardiovascular risk for CVDs patients, but also acting as the best precaution for otherwise healthy people - Advocates that nutritional habits that are formed at a young age are the best way to tackle the global epidemic that is CVDs

BOOK EXCERPT:
It is long known that many cells can shed extracellular vesicles, small membrane-enclosed cell fragments. Although the existence of extracellular vesicles has been recognized for many years, researchers are only beginning to understand their physiologic significance. Several recent studies have demonstrated that extracellular vesicles released from cells serve as a mode of cellular communication. They can carry diverse molecular payload (e.g. nucleic acids, bioactive lipids and proteins) to distal organs and recipient cells. Extracellular vesicles can be classified into three major groups: exosomes, microvesicles, and apoptotic bodies. All these types of extracellular vesicles can be found in a variety of biologic specimen and their numbers, distribution and composition may serve as biomarkers for various disorders, including cardiovascular disease. Although extracellular vesicle-mediated processes are currently best characterized in the fields of cancer biology and neurobiology, evidence is accumulating that extracellular vesicles play a key role in the pathophysiology of diabetes, thrombosis, inflammation and cardiovascular calcification. In this Research Topic, we invited review and methodological articles that advance our understanding of extracellular vesicle-related processes in vascular biology.

BOOK EXCERPT:
According to the Global Burden of Disease, nearly a quarter (24.8 per cent) of all deaths in India is due to CVDs. Countering the epidemic requires the development of strategies such as the formulation and effective implementation of evidencebased policy, reinforcement of health systems, and emphasis on prevention, early detection, and treatment with the use of both conventional and innovative techniques. By understanding the complex relationship between diet and disease, new prevention measures can be established and millions of lives can be saved. Featuring the most current knowledge from authoritative sources, AN INSIGHT TO THE IMPACT OF NUTRITION IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES reviews the impact of nutrition and diet in the identification, prevention and treatment of heart disease. The book explains the beneficial effects of novel biochemical parameters in the screening of the progression of there disease, the unavoidable risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases, how dietcan increase as well as reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, discusses the protocol of prevention, identification and treatment, that can beeffectively used for the betterment of the cardiac health in populations around the world. Providing insight into myriad medical risk factors and dietary factors related to cardiovascular disease, the book also addresses the ways that novel biochemical parameters used for the screening of the disease directly influence the treatment and also heart health. This comprehensive desk reference will benefit nutrition and cardiovascular researchers, primary care physicians, and dietitians in the race to reduce this deadly disease.
