This book presents selected papers from the ‘World Engineering Education Forum & Global Engineering Deans Council,’ held in November 2016 in Seoul, Korea. The massive changes currently underway in all areas of society, especially in engineering (and consequently in engineering education), call for new pedagogic qualifications and approaches. To face these current real-world challenges, higher education has to find innovative ways to quickly respond to these new needs. The papers gathered here address three essential problems:- The main approach to engineering in the 21st century is collaboration - at many levels, within universities or colleges, between institutions, and on a global scale. At the same time, we need a new quality of collaboration between academia, industry, professional and governmental organizations. - The complexity of engineering projects and solutions is rapidly growing, and increasingly includes non-technical aspects. - One of the key tasks for future engineers will be the development of a sustainable society, which is essential to keeping the global environment in balance.

This book is dedicated to the history and contemporary activities of IGIP that occupies a unique position among world organizations who are focused on Engineering Education. We are currently in the process of transforming education at all levels. This applies in particular to the professional and academic education and training of engineers. To face these current real-world challenges, higher education has to find innovative ways to quickly respond to these new needs. This and completely new technologies in education require specifically new and adapted approaches in Engineering Pedagogy. This book is a continuation of IGIP’s tradition to summarize and analyze intermediate results and foresee the main trends of further development of Engineering Pedagogy. It is written for the 50th anniversary of IGIP and contains valuable historic information as well as memories and opinions of IGIP members and specialists in Engineering Pedagogy. This book is intended for teachers at technical colleges and universities, students, post-graduates, administrative staff of educational institutions, staff of state educational ministries and committees, members of other societies with interest in Engineering Education, staff of personnel agencies, and everyone who is interested in Engineering Education and Pedagogy. The focus of this Special Issue is aimed at enhancing the discussion of Engineering Education, particularly related to technological and professional learning. In the 21st century, students face a challenging demand: they are expected to have the best scientific expertise, but also highly developed social skills and qualities like teamwork, creativity, communication, or leadership. Even though students and teachers are becoming more aware of this necessity, there is still a gap between academic life and the professional world. This book gathers papers presented at the 22nd International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning (ICL2019), which was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 25 to 27 September 2019. Covering various fields of interactive and collaborative learning, new learning models and applications, research in engineering pedagogy and project-based learning, the contributions focus on innovative ways in which higher education can respond to the real-world challenges related to the current transformation in the development of education. Since it was established, in 1998, the ICL conference has been devoted to new approaches in learning with a focus on collaborative learning. Today, it is a forum for sharing trends and research findings as well as presenting practical experiences in learning and engineering pedagogy. The book appeals to policymakers, academics, educators, researchers in pedagogy and learning theory, school teachers, and other professionals in the learning industry, and further and continuing education.

We are currently witnessing a significant transformation in the development of education and especially post-secondary education. These were the aims connected with the 23rd International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning (ICL2020), which was held online by University of Technology Tallinn, Estonia from 23 to 25 September 2020. Since its beginning in 1998, this conference is devoted to new approaches in learning with a focus on collaborative learning. Nowadays the ICL conferences are a forum of the exchange of relevant trends and research results as well as the presentation of practical experiences in Learning and Engineering Pedagogy. In this way, we try to bridge the gap between ‘pure’ scientific research and the everyday work of educators. Interested readership includes policymakers, academics, educators, researchers in pedagogy and learning theory, school teachers, learning industry, further and continuing education lecturers, etc.

The REV conference aims to discuss the fundamentals, applications and experiences in remote engineering, virtual instrumentation and related new technologies, as well as new concepts for education on these topics, including emerging technologies in learning, MOOCs & MOOLs, Open Resources, and STEM pre-university education. In the last 10 years, remote solutions based on Internet technology have been increasingly deployed in numerous areas of research, science, industry, medicine and education. With the new focus on cyber-physical systems, Industry 4.0, Internet of Things and the digital transformation in industry, economy and education, the core topics of the REV conference have become indispensable elements of a future digitized society. REV 2018, which was held at the University of Applied Sciences in Duesseldorf from 21–23 March 2018, addressed these topics as well as state-of-the-art and future trends.

This book presents the perspectives of nanotechnology educators from around the world. Experts present the pressing challenges of teaching nanoscience and engineering to students in all levels of education, postsecondary and informal environments. The book was inspired by the 2014 NSF workshop for Nanoscience and Engineering Education. Since nanotechnology is a relatively new field, authors present recommendations for designing nanotechnology education programs. The chapters describe methods to teach specific topics, such as probe microscopy, size and scale, and nanomaterial safety, in classrooms around the world. Other chapters describe the ways that organizations like NNIN and the NISE Network have influenced informal nanotechnology education. Information technology plays a growing role in all types of education and several chapters are devoted to describing ways how educators can use online curricula for teaching nanotechnology to students from preschool to graduate school.

This book presents novel findings concerning the systems, materials and processes used in solar energy conversion in communities. It begins with the core resource – solar radiation – and discusses the restrictions on the wide-scale implementation of conversion systems imposed by the built environment, as well as potential solutions. The book also describes efficient solar energy conversion in detail, focusing on heat and electricity production in communities and water reuse. Lastly, it analyzes the concept of sustainable communities, presenting examples from around the globe, along with novel approaches to improving their feasibility and affordability.
