Frequently neglected in the field of “comparative regionalist studies”, Maghrebi regionalism represents a complex phenomenon, which could provide interesting information concerning the “intersection of the international and domestic factors that shape the economic fortunes, security interests, and cultural activities of political actors” (Katzenstein 1996, 5).

Mauritania is a country located in the northwest region of Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. The country has a population of approximately 4.5 million people and covers an area of 1,030,700 square kilometers. The official language of Mauritania is Arabic, but French is also widely spoken. Islam is the predominant religion, and the country's economy is based on agriculture, fishing, and mining (particularly iron ore). The country has faced political, social, and economic challenges in recent years, including mental and physical slavery, gender inequality, terrorism, and poverty. Despite these challenges, Mauritania has a rich cultural history, with influences from the Berber, Arab, and African cultures. The country is also known for its vibrant music scene, including traditional instruments such as the ardin and tidinit.

This is the sixth report in a series on this subject. Topics covered in this report are: the ongoing threat from terrorism; the multilateral framework (UN and EU); human rights (including Guantânamo Bay, and use of evidence obtained through torture); Iraq; the Maghreb (specifically, Algeria, Morocco and Libya); the Middle East peace process; Afghanistan; and non-proliferation. The Committee emphasises the complex inter-relatedness of the areas investigated in this and its other reports, and stresses that Government foreign policy in the war against terrorism must reflect this reality.

"The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. This paper presents the economic outlook for the Middle East and Central Asia for 2006–07. Economic performance in the Middle East and Central Asia region remains strong, despite security problems in some countries and recent asset price reversals. Growth in the region continues to outpace global growth and should average 6–7 percent in 2006 and 2007—similar to the rates of the past three years. Strong external inflows resulting from high oil and non-oil commodity prices, foreign investments, and remittances are fueling credit growth, and inflation continues to edge up.
