The International Conference on Waste Management and the Environment is organised every two years by the Wessex Institute of Technology in collaboration with other institutions. This fifth conference follows the success of previous meetings held in C diz (2002), Rhodes (2004), Malta (2006) and Granada (2008). Waste Management is becoming one of the key problems of the modern world, an international issue that is intensified by the volume and complexity of domestic and industrial waste discarded by society. Unfortunately, many of the practices adopted in the past were aimed at short-term solutions without sufficient regard or knowledge for long-term implications on health, the environment or sustainability and this, in many cases, is leading to the need to take difficult and expensive remedial action. With our growing awareness of the detrimental environmental effects of current waste disposal, there is a significant onus of accountability for effective waste management. Better practice and safer solutions are required. Not only is there a need for more research on current disposal methods such as landfill, incineration, chemical and effluent treatment, but also on recycling, waste minimisation, clean technologies, waste monitoring, public and corporate awareness, and general education.

Zero Waste: Management Practices for Environmental Sustainability presents approaches for resource management centered on reducing waste and reusing and recycling materials. It aims to save energy by reducing energy consumption associated with extracting, processing, and transporting raw materials and waste, and also to reduce and eventually eliminate the need for landfills and incinerators. This book presents the various principles, methods, and tools that can be used to address different issues in the areas of industrial waste reduction and sustainability. It examines how to eliminate waste at the source and at all points of a supply chain, and how to shift from the current one-way linear resource model to a sustainable "closed-loop" system. Waste Management is one of the key problems of modern society due to the ever expanding volume and complexity of discarded domestic and industrial waste. Unfortunately many of the policies adopted in the past were aimed at short term solutions without due regard to the long term implications on health and the environment, leading in many cases to the need to take difficult and expensive remedial action. The desired direction of waste management is towards sustainable strategies. The approach which has emerged as the most sustainable strategy has been called 3Rs, where reduction, reuse and recycling, in this order, are seen as the best actions. Recently recovery is added as the fourth action (4Rs) applied in order to; for example, recover energy from waste that cannot be classified under the 3Rs. This largely decreases the volume of the waste that needs final disposal. Further steps are required towards improvement of current technologies, increased collaboration between the public, government and private sectors and increased involvement of all stakeholders. This book analyzes the status quo concerning waste generation and management systems in Thailand and other developing countries with similar problems. It addresses municipal, electronic, industrial and hazardous wastes, as well as management instruments, and key factors shaping the progress of waste management as a whole. The book highlights lessons learnt from various successful efforts to overcome these problems in Thailand, and offers recommendations for promoting sustainable waste management systems in Thailand and other countries with similar backgrounds in the future. This book is about understanding challenges in managing our environment and ensuring sustainability of this planet. This document is a curriculum for preservice teachers that attempts to illustrate how environmental education and development education are related and to provide practical assistance for teacher educators who would like to include these important fields in their programs. The project provides a focus for discussion of environmental and development education issues in teacher education in Australia. The particular audience for this project is preservice teacher education. However, the workshop modules are adapted easily for the continuing or inservice professional development of teachers. The workshops provided in this program may be used in three major ways: (1) the materials may be used as the basis for a linked program of professional and curriculum development; (2) the workshop materials may be infused, with or without local adaptations, into a range of courses, subjects, or units in a teacher education course; and (3) the workshops may be used as a set for a core or elective course in development and environmental education. Three workshops were written to be introductory. These workshops provide an introduction to environmental education, an introduction to development education, and a way of seeing the linkages and similarities between environmental and development education. These three workshops may be considered as a hub while the remaining 15 workshops are spokes that address particular themes and specialties in environmental and development education. These other themes discuss futures, science, educational resources, sustainability, population, and waste management among others. (DK)
