The Blessing Of Waters And Epiphany

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book examines the historical development of the blessing of waters and its theology in the East, with an emphasis on the Byzantine tradition. Exploring how Eastern Christians have sought these waters as a source of healing, purification, and communion with God, Denysenko unpacks their euchology and ritual context. The history and theology of the blessing of waters on Epiphany is informative for contemporary theologians, historians, pastors and students. Offering important insights into how Christians renew Baptism in receiving the blessed waters, this book also proposes new perspectives for theologizing Christian stewardship of ecology in the modern era based on a patristic liturgical synthesis. Denysenko presents an alternative framework for understanding the activity of the Trinity, enabling readers to encounter a vision of how participants encounter God in and after ritual.

Cherry Blossom Epiphany The Poetry And Philosophy Of A Flowering Tree

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Cherry Blossom Epiphany - the poetry and philosophy of a flowering tree - a selection, translation and lengthy explication of 3000 haiku, waka, senryû and kyôka about a major theme from I.P.O.O.H. (In Praise Of Olde Haiku)by robin d. gill 1. Haiku -Translation from Japanese to English 2. Japanese poetry - 8c-20c - waka, haiku and senryû 3. Natural History - flowering cherries 4. Japan - Culture - Edo Era 5. Nonfiction - Literature 6. Translation - applied 7. You tell me! If the solemn yet happy New Year's is the most important celebration of Japanese (Yamato) ethnic culture, and the quiet aesthetic practice of Moon-viewing in the fall the most elegant expression of Pan-Asian Buddhism=religion, the subject of this book, Blossom-viewing - which generally means sitting down together in vast crowds to drink, dance, sing and otherwise enjoy the flowering cherry in full-bloom - is less a rite than a riot (a word originally meaning an 'uproar'). The major carnival of the year, it is unusual for being held on a date that is not determined by astronomy, astrology or the accidents of history as most such events are in literate cultures. It takes place whenever the cherry trees are good and ready. Enjoyed in the flesh, the blossom-viewing, or hanami, is also of the mind, so much so, in fact, that poetry is often credited with the spread of the practice over the centuries from the Imperial courts to the maids of Edo. Nobles enjoyed link-verse contests presided over by famous poet-judges. Hermits hung poems feting this flower of flowers (to say the generic "flower" = hana in Japanese connotes "cherry!") on strips of paper from the branches of lone trees where only the wind would read them. In the Occident, too, flowers embody beauty and serve as reminders of mortality, but there is no flower that, like the cherry blossom, stands for all flowers. Even the rose, by any name, cannot compare with the sakura in depth and breadth of poetic trope or viewing practice. In Cherry Blossom Epiphany, Robin D. Gill hopes to help readers experience, metaphysically, some of this alternative world. Haiku is a hyper-short (17-syllabet or 7-beat) Japanese poem directly or indirectly touching upon seasonal phenomena, natural or cultural. Literally millions of these ku have been written, some, perhaps, many times, about the flowering cherry (sakura), and the human activity associated with it, blossom-viewing (hanami). As the most popular theme in traditional haiku (haikai), cherry-blossom ku tend to be overlooked by modern critics more interested in creativity expressed with fresh subjects; but this embarrassment of riches has much to offer the poet who is pushed to come up with something, anything, different from the rest and allows the editor to select from what is, for all practical purposes, an infinite number of ku. Literary critics, take note: Like Rise, Ye Sea Slugs! (2003) and Fly-ku! (2004), this book not only explores new ways to anthologize poetry but demonstrates the practice of multiple readings (an average of two per ku) as part of a composite translation turned into an object of art by innovative clustering. Book-collectors might further note that while Cherry Blossom Epiphany may not be hardback, it takes advantage of the many symbols included with Japanese font to introduce design ornamentation (the circle within the circle, the reverse (Buddhist) swastika, etc.) hitherto not found in English language print. It is a one-of-a-kind work of design by the author.

The Scrooge Epiphany

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

It's been six generations since the Scrooge Family had a truly evil member. Ebenezer is dead and buried, or so everyone thinks. Death thinks differently. The spirits of Christmas managed to extract the goodness buried deep inside Ebenezer, changing him to a kind and generous man to the end of his days. The Scrooges have continued to flourish down through the years, exuding kindness and happiness until the present day. Arthur and Natalie Scrooge had no inkling when they were blessed with the arrival of their daughter Edwina, or the distress their daughter would inflict upon them in the years to come. It was as if a dark family secret, resurrected from the past had created an hereditary fault in her DNA. Driven from an early age by greed and spite, Edwina quickly began to exhibit her ancestral uncle's former wicked ways. As she grew up, Edwina soon became well acquainted with the other dubious characters who dwelt in London's murky east end. years of scheming, swindling, moneylending and underworld dealings led to the culmination of her involvement in the disastrous north pole caper which saw her flee from Santa's toy factory, pursued by a herd of stampeding reindeer. Laying low back in Ebenezer's old counting house in Cornhill, Edwina is desperate for ideas to make a quick profit to save her from her murderous creditors. She seeks out Ebenezer's grave for inspiration and is alarmed to be confronted by Death, who is watching over him. despite her distress she learns about Ebenezer's hidden fortune. Meanwhile far away in an orphanage in Canada, Edwina's long lost cousin Olive is embarking on a journey of her own. With the help of her guardian Margaret she sets up a non-profit foundation and begins to be the voice and campaigner for the world's poor and oppressed. As she sets out to cross the Atlantic single handedly from New York to London in a small yacht, Edwina hits on a plan for a credit card scam and, having found Ebenezer's hidden fortune calls a meeting of fellow villains to discuss her plan. Unfortunately for her Mr Tchort the devil by another name, finds out and muscles in on the deal. Olive is tasked with rescuing Edwina from herself by her parents and with a party of her supporters, they band together to do battle with the forces of evil. There are demons and dead people. Beautiful goddesses and Dickensian characters who's bloodline has continued through the generations and still belong within the very fabric of London's east end. Will Olive save Edwina? who will be there to save Olive?

Epiphany Rise

BOOK EXCERPT:

"The continued journeys of my life have been a true testament of triumph accompanied with a relentless spirit. My hope in sharing this ultimately warmhearted story (my story) is to take you readers on your own journey. My passageway may break your heart at times, make you laugh out loud during others, and most assuredly make you question your own existence and experiences," Williams was born a black child in the ’60s to a suicidal mother with demons and addictions that would pursue her for most of her life. She was considered a special child—a child born with a purpose and, as some would suggest, born differently than most. She was born with a caul better known as a veil over her face and head. Her mother’s severe mood swings and a preoccupation with dying caused her to develop her own real physical body ailments, mood swings, and bouts with depression. She found herself running and hiding from her own demons. Her life was filled with distrust, sexual perversions, and self-destruction from early childhood and adulthood. This memoir chronicles how, amid all the tribulations, the author managed to face life with positivity and emerged victorious. Celebrate the triumphant return of a woman on her own, making rules and breaking them. Never before has a story of this magnitude been revealed with such depth and controversy.EPIPHANY RISE will engage you with a story of a lost life that was restored.
