New Edition: The Geometry of Spherical Space Form Groups (2nd Edition)In this volume, the geometry of spherical space form groups is studied using the eta invariant. The author reviews the analytical properties of the eta invariant of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer and describes how the eta invariant gives rise to torsion invariants in both K-theory and equivariant bordism. The eta invariant is used to compute the K-theory of spherical space forms, and to study the equivariant unitary bordism of spherical space forms and the Pinc and Spinc equivariant bordism groups for spherical space form groups. This leads to a complete structure theorem for these bordism and K-theory groups. There is a deep relationship between topology and analysis with differential geometry serving as the bridge. This book is intended to serve as an introduction to this subject for people from different research backgrounds. This book is intended as a research monograph for people who are not experts in all the areas discussed. It is written for topologists wishing to understand some of the analytic details and for analysists wishing to understand some of the topological ideas. It is also intended as an introduction to the field for graduate students.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This is the fourth volume of the Handbook of Geometry and Topology of Singularities, a series that aims to provide an accessible account of the state of the art of the subject, its frontiers, and its interactions with other areas of research. This volume consists of twelve chapters which provide an in-depth and reader-friendly survey of various important aspects of singularity theory. Some of these complement topics previously explored in volumes I to III. Amongst the topics studied in this volume are the Nash blow up, the space of arcs in algebraic varieties, determinantal singularities, Lipschitz geometry, indices of vector fields and 1-forms, motivic characteristic classes, the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity and comparison theorems that spring from the classical De Rham complex. Singularities are ubiquitous in mathematics and science in general. Singularity theory is a crucible where different types of mathematical problems interact, surprising connections are born and simple questions lead to ideas which resonate in other subjects. Authored by world experts, the various contributions deal with both classical material and modern developments, covering a wide range of topics which are linked to each other in fundamental ways. The book is addressed to graduate students and newcomers to the theory, as well as to specialists who can use it as a guidebook.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and Related Topics, which was held at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, in Germany, from April 5-11, 2009. This volume contains fourteen original research articles covering a broad range of topics that include: localization and rational homotopy theory, evaluation subgroups, free loop spaces, Whitehead products, spaces of algebraic maps, gauge groups, loop groups, operads, and string topology. In addition to reporting on various topics in the area, this volume is supposed to facilitate the exchange of ideas within Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces, and promote cross-fertilization between Homotopy Theory of Function Spaces and other areas. With these latter aims in mind, this volume includes a survey article which, with its extensive bibliography, should help bring researchers and graduate students up to speed on activity in this field as well as a problems list, which is an expanded and edited version of problems discussed in sessions held at the conference. The problems list is intended to suggest directions for future work.

BOOK EXCERPT:
These notes from Hans Rademacher's 1963 Hedrick Lectures have been gently polished and augmented by Emil Grosswald. While the topic itself is specialized, these sums are linked in diverse ways to many results in number theory, elliptical modular functions, and topology. The first main result is a surprising reciprocity law that is equivalent to the law of quadratic reciprocity.
