Combining an empirical analysis of the evolution of EU food regulation with a theoretical study of selected mechanisms used in governing food, this book provides a critical outlook on the capacity of the regulatory system to accommodate increased post-enlargement diversity of socio-economic concerns.

This issue is the first milestone on the way to the XXth AIDP World Congress dedica-ted to ‘Criminal Justice and Corporate Business’. It brings together key proceedings of the International Colloquium on ‘Food Regulation and Criminal Justice’, organised by the Chinese group of the AIPD in Beijing on September 23rd-26th, 2016. The volume contains the resolutions adopted in Beijing, the general report, four transversal articles, and several national reports. It offers a broad overview of the main challenges raised by contemporary food regulation, as well as various responses provided by criminal law around the globe. The contributions deal with issues concerning food security, food safety, and food fraud. They pay particular attention to the international dimension, the interaction with administrative enforcement mechanisms, and the increasing relevance of self-regulation.

Globalisation and technological innovation have been fuelling the need for increasing levels of trust in private actors, such as companies or special interest groups, to regulate and enforce significant aspects of people's daily lives: from environmental and social protection to the areas of food safety, advertising and financial markets. This book investigates the trust vested in private actors from the perspective of European citizens. It answers the question of whether private actors live up to citizens' expectations or whether more should be done as to the safeguarding of citizens' interests. This book's principal aim is to critically address the institutional and substantive legal issues resulting from European enlargement, chiefly those relating to the legal foundations on which the enlarged Union is being built. The accession of new Member States creates the potential for a stronger and more powerful Europe. Realising this potential, however, will depend on the ability of the EU to develop functional and effective governance structures, both at the European level and at the level of the individual Member States. While the acquis communautaire will ensure that formal laws in the new Member States will be aligned with those of existing members, the question remains as to how effective institutions will be in implementing changes, and what effects the imposed changes will have on the legitimacy of the new legal framework. This book, containing the work of leading scholars in law and social sciences, examines the current and future legal framework for EU governance, and the role that new members will - or will not - play in the creation of that framework, paying particular attention to the specific challenges membership in the EU poses to the acceding states of Central and Eastern Europe. This volume deals with the law governing the administrative implementation of European Union public policy. Much of this law is specific to individual policy sectors. The volume provides a study of such specialized admininstrative law for more than twenty sectors. This cross-sectoral approach allows for detailed comparisons of EU administration in diverse policy fields. It identifies situations where legal structures and approaches may be unnecessarily duplicated, thus indicating where a comprehensive, general system could be advantageous for both Union law and policy achievement. The comparative nature of the study also draws attention to policy fields which have proven to be testing grounds for approaches adopted subsequently in other areas. In addition, the work highlights the distinctive, highly networked, and strongly cooperative character of EU administration, as a reflection of, and a foundation for, the operative nature of the European Union as a whole.
