"Marine research infrastructures for ocean observation feature highly in the European strategy for marine and maritime research (COM (2008) 534) because they underpin all ocean activities, whether they are scientific or socioeconomic. This report summarizes the work of the expert group on marine research infrastructures, which met in the framework of the strategy, between 2010 and 2012. Marine observation infrastructures are essential to support the maritime economy, study the marine environment, ocean/climate interactions and support marine safety. Their socioeconomic and environmental value is therefore high as they help address key societal challenges of European scale."--Editor.

Ocean Science Data: Collection, Management, Networking, and Services presents the evolution of ocean science, information, theories, and data services for oceanographers looking for a better understanding of big data. The book is divided into chapters organized under the following main issues: marine science, history and data archaeology, data services in ocean science, society-driven data, and coproduction and education. Throughout the book, particular emphasis is put on data products quality and big data management strategy; embracing tools enabling data discovery, data preparation, self-service data accessibility, collaborative semantic metadata management, data standardization, and stream processing engines. Ocean Science Data provides an opportunity to start a new roadmap for data management issues, to be used for future collaboration among disciplines. This will include a focus on organizational objectives such as improved performance, competitive advantage, innovation, the sharing of lessons learned, integration, and continuous improvement of data management organization. This book is written for ocean scientists at postgraduate level and above as well as marine scientists and climate change scientists. - Presents a coherent overview of state-of-the-art research concerning ocean data - Provides an in-depth discussion of how ocean data impact all scales of the planetary system - Includes global case studies from experts in ocean data

"Reconciling maritime economic activities with preservation of marine ecosystems is one the major challenges of the European Union for the years to come. The new European strategy for Marine and Maritime Research adopted by the Commission in September 2008 is an essential pillar of the EU Maritime Policy. It will contribute to the preservation of fragile marine environments while sustaining the development of maritime activities such as transport, tourism, shipping and fisheries. The strategy sets out two strands of action. The first is designed to reinforce the links between marine research, which addresses the complexity of marine environments, and maritime research, which focuses on the development of new techniques and technologies for a better exploitation of marine resources. The second strand of action concerns governance. A Forum, made up of stakeholders from the marine and maritime research communities, governments, regions, industry and representatives from the civil society, will be established to set common research priorities and define measures to implement the strategy. The Commission will act as a facilitator, overseeing implementation and providing support through a range of funding mechanisms, in particular the Framework Programme." -- Editor.

The Global Ocean Science Report (GOSR) assesses for the first time the status and trends in ocean science capacity around the world. The report offers a global record of how, where, and by whom ocean science is conducted: generating knowledge, helping to protect ocean health, and empowering society to support sustainable ocean management in the framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. The GOSR identifies and quantifies the key elements of ocean science at the national, regional and global scales, including workforce, infrastructure and publications. It is the first collective attempt to systematically highlight opportunities as well as capacity gaps to advance international collaboration in ocean science and technology. This report is a resource for policy-makers, academics and other stakeholders seeking to harness the potential of ocean science to address global challenges. A comprehensive view of ocean science capacities at the national and global levels takes us closer to developing the global ocean science knowledge needed to ensure a healthy, sustainable ocean.

Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Infrastructures: Challenges and Opportunities reveals how environmental research infrastructures (RIs) provide new valuable insights on ecological processes that cannot be realized by more traditional short-term funding cycles and are integral to understand our changing world. This book bonds the latest state-of-the-science knowledge on environmental RIs, the challenges in creating them, their place in addressing scientific frontiers, and the new perspectives they bear. Each chapter is thoughtfully invested with fresh viewpoints from the environmental RI vantage as the authors explore and explain many topics such as the rationale and challenges in global change, field and modeling platforms, new tools, challenges in data management, distilling information into knowledge, and new developments in large-scale RIs. This work serves an advantageous guide for academics and practitioners alike who aim to deepen their knowledge in the field of science and project management, and logistics operations.
