This book examines the relationship between humans and nature that evolved in medieval Europe over the course of a millennium. From the beginning, people lived in nature and discovered things about it. Ancient societies bequeathed to the Middle Ages both the Bible and a pagan conception of natural history. These conflicting legacies shaped medieval European ideas about the natural order and what economic, moral and biological lessons it might teach. This book analyzes five themes found in medieval views of nature – grafting, breeding mules, original sin, property rights and disaster – to understand what some medieval people found in nature and what their assumptions and beliefs kept them from seeing.

The VAST conference brought together a large number of scholars working with or researching virtual reality in archaeology, a subject which also includes 3D modelling, computer visualisation and GIS for example. This volume publishes the papers given at the 2000 conference and covers a broad range of scientific and virtual cultural research, with case studies from the ancient Near East, Cumae near Naples, a prehistoric cave in Lecce (Italy), historic Bologna, and Pompeii among others. The papers are all in English and can also be found on the accompanying CD-Rom.

William K. Ketchison was born 7 July 1759 in Howden, Yorkshire, England. His parents were William Ketchison (1736-1763) and Sally Ayr. He emigrated in 1775 and settled in Virginia. He fought with the British in the American Revolution. He married Mary Rull (1761-1842) 16 March 1779 in Bedford, New York. They had ten children. They migrated to Canada in 1783 and settled first in Nova Scotia and then moved to Sidney, Ontario. William died in 1848 in Belleville, Ontario. Descendants and relatives lived throughout Ontario.

The two-volume set LNCS 8525-8526 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality, VAMR 2014, held as part of the 16th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCI 2014, in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, in June 2014, jointly with 13 other thematically similar conferences. This is a German history of cinema and film from the 1890s to 1945 with a focus on queer masculinity. Using media studies approaches, the study shows how film as a new medium is constituted through performative re-enactments of spectacular elements from the entertainment and knowledge cultures of the 19th century. In it, bodies, desires and identities are constantly remodelled through the formation of difference. Therefore, male queerness here does not mean the representation of male homosexuality. Rather, it is the dynamic result of complex medial processes, affects and (self-)knowledge on and off the screen. Building on Eve K. Sedgwick's queer-feminist concept of queer performativity, the author creates a historically situated model with which she traces various figures of technically anthropomorphic queer masculinity in the medium of film in an empowering sense. This book is a translation of an original German 1st edition Performative Figuren queerer Männlichkeit by Christiane König, published by J.B.Metzler, imprint of Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020.
