This volume gives a status report on the scientific investigations which can be undertaken in the field of exobiology using instruments in Earth orbit. A brief list of these recommended experiments is given here. Those listed for the Observational Exobiology section are in order of decreasing priority as determined by a consensus of the Workshop members. Otherwise, no priorities are implied by the order in which the experiments are listed. Observational Exobiology: 1. Search for extrasolar planetary systems, 2. Study star-forming regions in the galaxy--analogs for the solar nebula, 3. Study comets, asteroids, Titan, and the giant planets in our own solar system, 4. Study the organic chemistry of interstellar molecular clouds. Cosmic Dust Collection: 1. Develop and implement capture techniques which preserve biogenic material, 2. Develop and implement techniques to determine the orbits of dust particles, 3. Refine laboratory methods for the analysis of small particles. In Situ Experiments: 1. Study the formation, condensation, aggregation, and surface chemistry of suspended dust grains, 2. Create, release, and monitor an artificial comet in space, 3. Determine the viability of microorganisms in space.

Leading researchers in the area of the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe contributed to Exobiology: Matter, Energy, and Information in the Origin and Evolution of Life in the Universe. This volume provides a review of this interdisciplinary field. In 50 chapters many aspects that contribute to exobiology are reviewed by 90 authors. These include: historical perspective of biological evolution; cultural aspects of exobiology, cosmic, chemical and biological evolution, molecular biology, geochronology, biogeochemistry, biogeology, and planetology. Some of the current missions are discussed. Other subjects in the frontier of exobiology are reviewed, such as the search for planets outside the solar system, and the possible manifestation of intelligence in those new potential environments. The SETI research effort is well represented in this general overview of exobiology. This book is the proceedings of the Fifth Trieste Conference on Chemical Evolution that took place in September 1997. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam who suggested the initiation of the Trieste conferences on chemical evolution and the origin of life. This report contains a listing of 1987 publications resulting from research supported by the Exobiology Program Office of Space Science and Applications of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Research supported by the Exobiology Program is explored in the areas of Cosmic Evolution of Biogenic Compounds, Prebiotic Evolution, Early Evolution of Life, and Evolution of Advanced Life. Pre-mission and pre-project activities supporting these areas are supported in the areas of Solar System Exploration and Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

Current Aspects of Exobiology covers the philosophical aspects, scientific approach, and related research problems in exobiology. Most of the chapters are presented at the Current Research in Exobiology Symposium, held at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on February 26-28, 1963. This book is composed of 10 chapters and begins with an overview of the nature and occurrence of extraterrestrial living matter. The next chapters survey certain line of evidence concerning extraterrestrial life, including investigation of organo-chemical evolution, organic remains in meteorites, microorganisms of Middle Precambrian Age, and the survival capabilities and the performance of earth organisms in simulated extraterrestrial environments. Another chapter looks into the possibility of the accidental introduction of terrestrial microorganisms to other planets during the course of space exploration by unmanned spacecraft. The concluding chapters explore the potential of radio search for other intelligent species in space.
