BOOK EXCERPT:

Careful moral reflection and action are important across all of modern life, but they are especially critical when it comes to our place as individuals and communities in matters of economics. We know intuitively that our daily decisions about money and markets have a deep impact on others, but it is easy to become overwhelmed and confused or, worse, to feel as if our actions don't make a difference. Faithful Economics is the ideal guide for navigating this complex arena and coming to a deeper understanding of how our faith and our economic lives intersect. In twenty-five short lessons, each digestible in one brief sitting, the author explores a wide range of topics from lobbying and just wages to globalization and Catholic social teaching. Each section illuminates the issues, explains the questions, and leaves the reader with clarity and understanding. An ideal book for students, curious readers, and all who want to understand their place as a faithful participant in economic life.

Entering The New Theological Space

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents theological reflections on the changing nature of church mission and Christian identity within a theology of 'blurred encounter' - a physical, social, political and spiritual space where once solid hierarchies and patterns are giving way to more fluid and in many ways unsettling exchanges. The issues raised and dynamics explored apply to all socially-produced space, thus tending to 'blur' that most fundamental of theological categories - namely urban vs. rural theology. Engaging in a sharper way with some of the helpful but inevitably broad-brush conclusions raised by recent church-based reports (Mission-shaped Church, Faithful Cities), the authors examine some of the practical and theological implications of this research for the issue of effective management and therefore church leadership generally. Speaking to practitioners in the field of practical theology as well as those engaged in theological and ministerial training, key voices encompass dimensions of power and conflict, and identify some of the present and future opportunities and challenges to church/faith-based engagement and leadership arising from blurred encounters. Contributors - practitioners and theorists - cover a wide spectrum of interdisciplinary professional contexts and academic/denominational interests. Contributors include: John Atherton, John Reader, Helen Cameron, Martyn Percy, Malcolm Brown, Karen Lord, Clare McBeath and Margaret Goodall.

Economics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This “treatise”, compiled and composed over many years, is in response to the identified need to look at the combined worth of history, religion and economics, with particular interest in the ethical, moral and philosophical aspects. With unreserved deference to experts on each of these individual subjects, the book presents the “layman’s” opinion that some simplified understanding of these issues, so critical to our everyday lives, will help maintain a balanced appreciation of the vital interaction between history, religion and economics, and will indicate that looking at only one aspect at a time could miss out on dimensions that give greater meaning and usefulness to the other/s. The book demonstrates that many of the religious “scriptures” are, in fact, also economic principles. Many are applicable even now, although their origin may not be appreciated. In addition, much of the economic thought was, and probably still is, intertwined with, or may even originate in part from, ethics and philosophy. The book describes the need for a re-think of many of the principles of economics, and how modern economics should be part of a “New World Order”, that can give greater meaning to religion and greater appreciation of history, and help shape a more wholesome future society. While the major Faiths of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Bahá’í are discussed, others such as Hinduism and Buddhism have similar tenets. Only authentic original religious texts and references from renowned authors are used. The reference list at the end will be appreciated by anyone wishing to delve deeper into any subject presented. It is hoped that the book makes good and easy reading, but this should not detract from the value of the content. The book combines some qualities of a textbook, but the aim is to help widen the horizons of the reader.

Economics As An Evolutionary Science

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Economics is traditionally taken to be the social science concerned with the production, consumption, exchange, and distribution of wealth and commodities. Economists carefully track the comings and goings of the human household, whether written small (microeconomics) or large (macroeconomics) and attempt to predict future patterns under different situations. However, in constructing their models of economic behavior, economists often lose sight of the actual characteristics and motivations of their human subjects. In consequence, they have found the goal of an explanatory and predictive science to be elusive. Economics as an Evolutionary Science reorients economics toward a more direct appreciation of human nature, with an emphasis on what we have learned from recent advances in evolutionary science. The authors integrate economics and evolution to produce a social science that is rigorous, internally coherent, testable, and consistent with the natural sciences. The authors suggest an expanded definition of "fitness," as in Darwin's survival of the fittest, emphasizing not only the importance of reproduction and the quality of offspring, but also the unique ability of humans to provide material wealth to their children. The book offers a coherent explanation for the recent decline in fertility, which is shown to be consistent with the evolutionary goal of maximizing genetic success. In addition, the authors demonstrate the relevance to economics of several core concepts derived from biologists, including the genetics of parent-offspring conflict, inclusive fitness theory, and the phenomena of R-selection and K-selection. The keystone of their presentation is a cogent critique of the traditional concept of "utility." As the authors demonstrate, the concept can be modified to reflect the fundamental evolutionary principle whereby living things-including human beings-have been selected to behave in a manner that maximizes their genetic representation in future generations. Despite the extraordinary interest in applying evolutionary biology to other disciplines, Economics as an Evolutionary Science marks the first major attempt at a synthesis of biology and economics. Scholarly yet accessible, this volume offers unique and original perspectives on an entire discipline.

Handbook Of Ethics Of Islamic Economics And Finance

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Since the financial crisis of 2007/2008, a renewed discussion on the ethics and finance is being examined from different dimensions – finance for good society, responsible finance, ethical finance, financial crimes, and financial repression. The principal objective of this Handbook on Ethics of Islamic Economics and Finance is to provide a deeper understanding of the ethical underpinning of Islamic economics and finance. The reader will notice that the Handbook reflects a diversity of views on the subject of economic and business ethics in Islam across the intellectual spectrum of Muslim thought over the globe. Handbook attempts to find answers to some questions concerning the definition and characteristics of the ethical system in Islam. What is its goal and how do its rules and practices ensure welfare for individuals and society? Are the moral principles universal and invariable or do they change and adapt with the social changes of communities and progress in science and technology? Is the present generation accountable for the welfare of future generations? Where is the boundary between law and ethics and who guarantees their adoption and implementation?
