Rural enterprises have played an important role in the extraordinary success of China’s economy over the last twenty years. This study comprehensively examines the financing of China’s rural enterprises over the reform period and discusses the key elements driving rural enterprise development in China, including the growth of rural enterprises and enterprise-level behavior, the role of state policy, rural financial institutions, and local government controls.

This book examines how educational change has progressed in three contrasting areas spread across China since 1990, exploring key issues concerning rural education in poor, rich and minority areas. Of the three areas covered in this book, the first is a rich one near Beijing; the second is in the northwest in Shanxi on the Loess plateau; and the third is in Sichuan on the high plateau leading to Tibet. Central issues include the impact of large-scale demographic change and migration, with increasing numbers of left-behind children in sending areas, and large increases in the numbers of inbound migrants in receiving areas; dramatic increases in the boarding of children in rural areas as a result of rural school merge; changing patterns of teacher deployment; recentralization of responsibilities for school financing; and growing concerns regarding horizontal and vertical inequalities in both access and participation.

This book examines the credit needs and the borrowing behaviour of rural households in China in recent years. Based on a micro-study of three villages with dissimilar economic characteristics in Jiangxi province, this book investigates the sources of finance, formal and informal, in rural areas and the different types of credit that farmers demand. Thirty years have passed since the beginning of the reform era in China which saw important changes in agriculture and rural organizations, but it is clear that certain entrenched legacies from pre-reform China still linger on even after WTO accession, most importantly the key role played by state actors and politics in the development of markets in rural China. Although increasingly diversified markets have emerged for major agricultural inputs and products, their development cannot be understood without taking this role into account. Against this backdrop, the contributors to this book offer a fresh account of rural politics and markets, consciously linking these two realms and highlighting their interconnectedness. The book is organized in three parts addressing respectively markets for agricultural inputs and outputs as well as current policies in rural development. In the research and analysis of how the future of rural banking in China will look like, the author chooses to adopt a pragmatic and policy-like approach towards the analysis of this issue. Current issues of the rural banking system are being discussed in depth, followed by a range of policy recommendations put forth that attempts to address these issues.
