According to the contributors to this volume, the relationship of Buddhism and the arts in Japan is less the rendering of Buddhist philosophical ideas through artistic imagery than it is the development of concepts and expressions in a virtually inseparable unity. By challenging those who consider religion to be the primary phenomenon and art the secondary arena for the apprehension of religious meanings, these essays reveal the collapse of other dichotomies as well. Touching on works produced at every social level, they explore a fascinating set of connections within Japanese culture and move to re-envision such usual distinctions as religion and art, sacred and secular, Buddhism and Shinto, theory and substance, elite and popular, and even audience and artist. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th IFIP-TC6 Networking Conference, Networking 2010. Papers were solicited in three broad topic areas: applications and services, network technologies, and internet design. All papers were considered on their merits by a uni?ed Technical ProgramCommittee (TPC); there was no attempt to enforce a quota among topic areas. We believe the resulting program is an excellentrepresentationofthebreadthofrecentadvancesinnetworkingresearch. This year, the conference received 101 full paper submissions from 23 co- trieson?vecontinents,re?ectingastrongdiversityinthenetworkingcommunity. Similarly, the 92 members of the TPC are from 21 countries and include a mix of academic, industry, and governmental a?liations. The TPC members, aided by some 50 external reviewers, provided a total of 470 reviews and follow-up discussions totaling more than 200 messages. The ?nal selections were made at a TPC meeting hosted by Columbia University in New York City, with both in-person and remote participation. In total, authors of accepted papers have academic and industry a?liations in 15 countries. We ?nally selected 24papers for presentationduring the conference technical sessions. A small number of papers were assigned a shepherd from the TPC to assist in paper revision. These statistics represent an acceptance rate of just under 24%, comparable to that of previous years. The TPC also identi?ed several papers that re?ect particularly promising early results; these papers were selected for presentation as work-in-progress papers and are identi?ed as such in the proceedings.

This book discusses the karst and pseudokarst of the Upper Midwest, USA, consisting of the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois—the first regional synthesis in 40 years. Starting with an overview of the regional geology of what is largely glaciated fluviokarst and paleokarst developed on Paleozoic carbonates, but including other lithologies such as the St. Peter Sandstone and the Ft. Dodge Gypsum, the caves, springs, sinkholes, and karst hydrogeology of each state are described. Special attention is devoted to the region’s longest caves: Coldwater Cave, Mystery Cave, and the Minnesota Cave Preserve caves. Application of tools such as data loggers and LiDAR, with new conceptual models such as hypogenic speleogenesis, has been transformative here. Special topics include lead and zinc mining in the Driftless Area, vertebrate and invertebrate cave fauna near the Laurentide ice limit, the impact and policies of nutrient and herbicide intensive modern agriculture on karst, and paleoclimate studies.
