This book explores the role of FIFA in brokering the development of football in Africa and its relationship with that continent's football associations and regional governing body. Africa is no longer on the periphery of world football but the economic disparities between the first and the third worlds hinder the development of the game. The author shows convincingly how Africa's advance within world football is tied to its national political economy and how the balance of power within FIFA still clearly favours its European members.

Football, in many ways, is a visual endeavour. From the visual experience within the stadium itself to worldwide media representations, from advertisements to football art and artefacts: football is much about seeing and being seen, about watching, making visual and being visualised. The FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa has turned into a perfect example of the visual dimensions of football. Stadiums have been built and marketed as tourist attractions, mass media and internet platforms are advertising South African cities and venues, logos and emblems are displayed and celebrated, exhibitions are organised in museums world-wide. This book explores the social, cultural and political role of football in Africa by focusing on the issue of its visibility and invisibility. The contributions consider the history and present of football in different parts of Africa. They examine historical and recent pictures and images of football and football players, as well as places and spaces of their production and perception. They analyse the visual dimensions expressed in sports infrastructure, football media-scapes, and in expressive and material arts. This book thus contributes to the growing interest in football in Africa by exploring a new field of research into sports. This volume provides an analysis of the history, origins, and development of football in Africa. It brings together an edited assemblage of essays that describe and analyse football in nine African countries, including Cameroon, DRC, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda, from a social science perspective. The selection of these countries highlights the three major foreign languages and powers that have governed the continent; The English, the French, and Arabic, and provides a prism through which to analyze and compare how football developed in the various countries throughout Africa. This book explores various aspects of intranational elite football in Africa, drawing on the expertise of notable scholars from across the world. Africa’s Elite Football focuses on an area largely ignored by current scholarship on African football, where interest has focused on international migration. In exploring the intranational, the book is written in two parts. The first is a general focus on the continent, and the second is an examination of country cases. The general focus of the book is on the nature of elite tier leagues, the relationship between politics and football, the media, youth academies, intranational migration and fans. Notably, chapters on topics such as intranational migration present groundbreaking scholarship in this area. Currently, football discourses on migration focus on international migration of footballers, yet the majority of migration in African football is intranational. Thus, by addressing the intranational, this book brings attention to an area that is underrepresented in the current academic discourse. The second part of the book, which focuses on country cases, covers Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The topics explored in those cases include religiosity, health, women’s football, media and management. The coverage of health-related issues is particularly important given that several books on African football rarely broach such a topic. There is no shortage of African talent in European Football. In fact, a definitive list of the continent´s finest players in England´s top flight alone, for example, is extremely difficult to compile. Considering that talents such as Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Kolo Toure, Benni McCarthy, El-Hadji Diouf and Yakubu are all regularly on display week-in, week-out, African football fans have a multitude of riches to admire. Notwithstanding, Africa’s main concern must be towards capturing the coveted FIFA World Cup. THE BIG QUESTION IS: If Africa were that good in football why are they not showing it at the FIFA World Cup? So far no African team (country) has gone beyond the FIFA World Cup quarter final. Ghana and Cameroon have shown class at one time and once made it to the 8th stage though. Senegal and Nigeria have also once made it past the first 16th stage. No doubt, Africa has the football talents; let’s pray and hope her officials live up to the challenge in shaping their national team’s spirit to tangible results. Just getting to the 16th stage is not good enough for the euphoria. Africa can do better than merely showing up. I predict a great showing in South Africa 2010, at least to 8th stage, (the semi-finals) and winning in Brazil in 2014. The question then is: Which African country is ready to meet this challenge? The truth of the matter is any of the African teams is capable. This book looks at the history of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and goes on to feature Africa’s great footballers Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

When studying the social phenomena in and around football, five major aspects of globalisation processes become evident: international migration, the global flow of capital, the syncretistic nature of tradition and modernity in contemporary culture, new experiences of time and space and the revolution in information technologies. In an exploration of these themes the collection provides insight into academic studies of football in Portugal, Germany, England, Spain, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the USA.
