BOOK EXCERPT:
The main protagonist is a naive Chinaman, Lee Fong, of basic tastes and culture, whose work in China involved preparing various animals for human consumption, principally in the abundant dog-markets, which proliferated in his local area. He was brought up in an orphanage with an horrific environment, but made two important friendships, which enabled him to eventually escape to England. One was a lady of mixed descent with whom he fell deeply in love, but his other friend evolved into a mercenary individual, once he had tasted the riches of the West. After many years of hardship in the dog-markets he made his way to London, where his two friends had opened a Chinese restaurant. The story relates how his conception and cruelty to animals, like the dogs he had abused in China, slowly but radically changes through a sequence of bizzare events.

BOOK EXCERPT:
When Molly Gibson, sensual romance writer but shyest and most insecure member of the Gumshoe Chicks, finds more than she bargained for in the Driscoll's dog trailer, the Chicks - Molly, Abi and Dana - swap show ring etiquette and grooming mitts for some deadly serious sleuthing. Their only clues are the blood splattered dog-grooming scissors found buried in a fellow competitor's chest, a husband blackmailing his wife, and a death threat written on a Betty Boop writing pad. As the Chicks investigate, they discover several suspects at the dog show have something to hide. Was the dead man really a serial Don Juan, intent on taking every female show competitor over 30 to bed? Did the ostentatious poodle exhibitor lose his temper, decide to teach the victim a lesson, and go too far? Or, was the female judge with the Gucci boots angry when the victim threatened to expose her infidelity? And who is that bad-boy biker with the sea-blue eyes and kissable lips? Molly, who has enough trouble resolving conflict in her fictional stories is freaked out at the prospect of confronting a real-life antihero. A villain who's killed not once, but twice, and if she doesn't apply her creative flair to unearthing the culprit, could easily kill again. Just when the Chicks think they know who the murderer is, Molly stumbles over another clue proving them all wrong. With only a geriatric chihuahua and a hairless broom to work with, will she live to pass this message on to the others?

BOOK EXCERPT:
Yes, humans and canines are different species, but current research provides fascinating, irrefutable evidence that what we share with our dogs is greater than how we vary. As behaviorist and zoologist Dr. Patricia McConnell tells us in this remarkable new book about emotions in dogs and in people, more and more scientists accept the premise that dogs have rich emotional lives, exhibiting a wide range of feelings including fear, anger, surprise, sadness, and love. In For the Love of a Dog, McConnell suggests that one of the reasons we love dogs so much is that they express emotions in ways similar to humans. After all, who can communicate joy better than a puppy? But not all emotional expressions are obvious, and McConnell teaches both beginning dog owners and experienced dog lovers how to read the more subtle expressions hidden behind fuzzy faces and floppy ears. For those of us who deeply cherish our dogs but are sometimes baffled by their behavior, For the Love of a Dog will come as a revelation–a treasure trove of useful facts, informed speculation, and intriguing accounts of man’s best friend at his worst and at his very best. Readers will discover how fear, anger, and happiness underlie the lives of both people and dogs and, most important, how understanding emotion in both species can improve the relationship between them. Thus McConnell introduces us to the possibility of a richer, more rewarding relationship with our dogs. While we may never be absolutely certain what our dogs are feeling, with the help of this riveting book we can understand more than we ever thought possible. Those who consider their dogs part of the family will find For the Love of a Dog engaging, enlightening, and utterly engrossing.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Never have there been friends more loyal, kind, and encouraging to humankind than dogs. More than companionship, they become our other half; they always seem to know just what to do when we need comfort, and through their unabashed joy for life, they can teach us something about ourselves. In For the Love of My Dogs, David Ravinsky celebrates forty-five years of friendship with five canines. From his childhood with the rambunctious yet loyal mutt Caesar, to new adulthood with the docile golden Gleason, to the inseparable Reagan and Brady, to the ray of sunshine Mace—each dog could not be any more different from each other, but each one has left an unforgettable mark on who he is. Yet even David knows that his friendships with his dogs could not last forever. Each story of happiness comes with one of loss, and David doesn’t shy away from talking about the darkness that falls over a household when we lose a friend. But the storm isn’t eternal, and what emerges out the other side is an all-encompassing love for man’s best friend—and even some lessons about the nature of life. Written with honesty and love, For the Love of My Dogs is a delight for pet owners who have irreplaceable bonds with their furry friends.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The award-winning scientist who started a revolution in the understanding of dog intelligence offers amazing new insights into the interior lives of our best -- and smartest -- animal friends The journey began with a gut reaction. When award-winning scientist Dr Brian Hare watched a chimpanzee fail to read a simple human hand gesture in an intelligence test, he blurted out, ‘My dog can do that!’ The psychologist running the test challenged him to prove it, sending Hare on an odyssey to unlock the cognitive and evolutionary mysteries of our four-legged friends. Hare’s research over the past two decades has yielded startling discoveries about how dogs think. He has pioneered studies that have proven that dogs exhibit a brand of genius for getting along with people that is unique in the animal kingdom, and that when dogs domesticated themselves around 40,000 years ago they became far more like human infants than their wolf ancestors. These findings are transforming how we live and work with our canine friends, and how we understand them. Is your dog purposefully disobeying you? Probably, and often behind your back. Should you act like ‘top dog to maintain control? No, you’re better off displaying your friendliness – not just to your dog but to everyone around you. Which breed is cleverest? As it happens, breed doesn’t matter much, though other factors do. These are just some of the extraordinary insights to be found in The Genius of Dogs – the seminal book on how dogs evolved their unique intelligence alongside human companions, and how you can use this groundbreaking science to build a better relationship with your own dog.
