The Forest Regeneration Manual presents state-of-the-art information about current regeneration practices for southern pines in the United States. Over 1.2 billion seedlings of five major species -- loblolly, slash, longleaf, sand, and shortleaf -- are planted each year. In 22 chapters, the Manual details fundamental steps in establishing successful young pine plantations: regeneration planning, including economic and legal aspects; regeneration harvest methods; propagation by seed and vegetative techniques; bareroot and container seedling culturing in the nursery; measures of seedling quality; site potential; -- environment, associated vegetation, soils; matching species to sites; site preparation -- mechanical and chemical methods, fire, fertilization; seedling handling before planting; planting practices and measures of regeneration success; promoting early plantation growth and management of competing vegetation, insects, disease, and wildlife.

Tropical dry forests are the most exploited and endangered ecosystems in the world. A combination of climatic and human factors often reduce these forests to patches of dry scrubs or savannas. Because these ecosystems experience a more arduous and less anticipated environment, they are more prone to environmental stress as plant communities are developed. Therefore, urgent research is necessary to understand both the detrimental issues and problem-solving approaches to conserving these important forests. The Handbook of Research on the Conservation and Restoration of Tropical Dry Forests is a pivotal reference source that combines theory and practice on the current trends and issues in this important ecological subject and discusses future challenges towards conservation strategies of these tropical dry forests. Public debate has stimulated interest in finding greater compatibility among forest management regimes. The debate has often portrayed management choices as tradeoffs between biophysical and socioeconomic components of ecosystems. Here we focus on specific management strategies and emphasize broad goals such as biodiversity, wood production and habitat conservation while maintaining other values from forestlands desired by the public. We examine the following proposition: Commodity production (timber, nontimber forest products) and the other forest values (biodiversity, fish and wildlife habitat) can be simultaneously produced from the same area in a socially acceptable manner. Based on recent research in the Pacific Northwest, we show there are alternatives for managing forest ecosystems that avoid the divisive arena of 'either-or' choices. Much of the work discussed in this book addresses two aspects of the compatibility issue. First, how are various forest management practices related to an array of associated goods and services? Second, how do different approaches to forest management affect relatively large and complex ecosystems?

For the last two decades the loss of, in particular, tropical rainforest has alarmed the public in the developed parts of the world. The debate has been characterised by a lack of understand ing of the causes and effects of the process, leading to the prevailing reaction being unquali fied condemnation. Such attitude has even been observed among scientists, claiming suprem acy to biodiversity conservation. Many scientific analyses are available, but the basis for so ber debates and appropriate actions is still highly insufficient. Two recent international initia tives! will hopefully lead to improved knowledge of deforestation and forest degradation as they recognise the need for studies to critically investigate those issues. This book will pro vide useful input to the initiatives. In my opinion, the scientific analyses have not sufficiently promoted the understanding that the fate of tropical forests is first and foremost a concern of the governments of the countries in which the forests are situated. Tropical forests may be important to the global environment and their rich biodiversity may be a human heritage. But their main importance is their poten tial contribution to improving livelihood in the countries in question.

This volume comprises fifteen papers exploring the consequences of applying modern time-series methods, particularly co-integrated time-series methods, for the analysis of forest economics problems. The methods represent the forefront of econometrics in this area, and the volume is the first of its kind. An introductory paper explains the econometrics of unit-root processes. Much of what follows in the other papers depends upon only a few of the ideas presented in the introduction. The volume includes tests of, e.g., the Law of One Price, land valuation models, demand and supply models, Granger-causality, and forecast models. The reader will learn a great deal about forest economies, particularly in Northern Europe, and about the practical use of modern time-series methods. The methods presented are applicable to other fields of economics. The volume is aimed at researchers in applied economics and as a supplement to (advanced) theoretical textbooks, mainly in Natural Resource Economics.
