Guided by the multifaceted relations between city and text, Charting Literary Urban Studies: Texts as Models of and for the City attempts to chart the burgeoning field of literary urban studies by outlining how texts in varying degrees function as both representations of the city and as blueprints for its future development. The study addresses questions such as these: How do literary texts represent urban complexities – and how can they capture the uniqueness of a given city? How do literary texts simulate layers of urban memory – and how can they reinforce or help dissolve path dependencies in urban development? What role can literary studies play in interdisciplinary urban research? Are the blueprints or 'recipes' for urban development that most quickly travel around the globe – such as the 'creative city', the 'green city' or the 'smart city' – really always the ones that best solve a given problem? Or is the global spread of such travelling urban models not least a matter of their narrative packaging? In answering these key questions, this book also advances a literary studies contribution to the general theory of models, tracing a heuristic trajectory from the analysis of literary texts as representations of urban developments to an analysis of literary strategies in planning documents and other pragmatic, non-literary texts.

In Modernity through Letter Writing Claudia B. Haake shows how the Cherokees and Senecas envisioned their political modernity in missives they sent to members of the federal government to negotiate their status. They not only used their letters, petitions, and memoranda to reject incorporation into the United States and to express their continuing adherence to their own laws and customs but also to mark areas where they were willing to compromise. As they found themselves increasingly unable to secure opportunities for face-to-face meetings with representatives of the federal government, Cherokees and Senecas relied more heavily on letter writing to conduct diplomatic relations with the U.S. government. The amount of time and energy they expended on the missives demonstrates that authors from both tribes considered letters, memoranda, and petitions to be a crucial political strategy. Instead of merely observing Western written conventions, the Cherokees and Senecas incorporated oral writing and consciously insisted on elements of their own culture they wanted to preserve, seeking to convey to the government a vision of their continued political separateness as well as of their own modernity.

Long run processes of socio-economic change generate prodigious problems of social conflict and social control, and governments responsible for these processes must therefore manage the resultant conflict. Consequently, the success or failure of a government's management of such conflicts is a crucial factor in development outcomes. This volume investigates the political struggle for development specifically in two vital regions - East Asia and Latin America. This analysis calls into question the dominant emphasis on institutional and cultural bases for stable growth. A careful historical account of the two regions is presented, which permits the rigorous testing of conventional wisdoms regarding development. Of importance to a broad range of academics in the spheres of development studies, politics, political economy and sociology, this book will also make an interesting read for those with a general interest in these areas.

Il 24 novembre 2016, il governo colombiano e le Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia - Ejército del Pueblo (FARC-EP) hanno firmato un accordo volto a garantire una pace stabile e duratura alla popolazione colombiana. In seguito ad una guerra civile durata per più di cinquant'anni, il più influente gruppo di guerriglieri nel paese ha mostrato la sua determinazione a porre fine alla lotta armata contro lo Stato e a perseguire i suoi scopi politici e ideologici attraverso mezzi legali e democratici. Prendendo ispirazione dai recenti sviluppi riguardanti il caso colombiano, quest’opera mette in risalto il ruolo svolto dal Diritto Internazionale e dalle relative entità giuridiche all'interno del conflitto armato combattuto tra il governo colombiano e le FARC, nonché durante i negoziati che hanno portato alla firma dell’accordo di pace nel 2016. In particolare, il lavoro valuta la conformità delle parti belligeranti con gli obblighi stabiliti da tre principali rami del Diritto Internazionale: il Diritto Internazionale Umanitario, il Diritto Internazionale Penale e il Diritto Internazionale dei Diritti Umani. On November 24, 2016, the Colombian government and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia – Ejército del Pueblo (FARC-EP) signed a final peace agreement aimed at guaranteeing a reliable and long-lasting peace to Colombia and its population. After a civil war lasted for more than five decades, the main guerrilla movement in the country has shown its determination to pursue its ideological purposes through legal and democratic means, permanently abandoning insurgency and revolutionary political aspirations. By taking inspiration from the recent developments concerning the Colombian case, this study evaluates the role played by International Law and the relevant international legal entities within the armed conflict fought between the Colombian government and the FARC, as well as during the negotiations that led to the signature of the peace agreement in 2016. Specifically, it assesses the compliance of the belligerent parties with the obligations established by three main bodies of law: International Humanitarian Law, International Criminal Law, and International Human Rights Law.
