This book addresses big data as a socio-technical construct with huge potential for innovation in key sectors such as healthcare, government and business. Big data and its increasingly widespread use in such influential spheres can generate ethically controversial decisions, including questions surrounding privacy, consent and accountability. This book attempts to unpack the epistemological implications of the term ‘big data’, as well as the opportunities and responsibilities which come with it. The author analyses the linguistic texture of the big data narrative in the news media, in healthcare and in EU law on data protection, in order to contribute to its understanding from the critical perspective of language studies. Inequalities have greatly strengthened the economic and political power of those people at the top. This volume is titled “Global Inequalities and Polarization” and contains eight selected articles that approach inequality and polarization from different angles.

This book is an exploration of the dimensions of meaning in language from several important perspectives that are of major interest to scholars today, bringing together studies from the realms of linguistic pragmatics, semantics, ontological knowledge engineering, and computational linguistics. Situated within modern functional-cognitive constructional-ontological and computational paradigms, the analyses here are supported by authentic language data, including corpus data, from a rich set of languages. Context and situation play an important but complex role in meaning elaboration. The role of context and situation is elusive and has proved difficult to elucidate with respect to meaning and knowledge representation. This volume provides evidence of the nature of the, often rapid, emergence of meaning in the digital world of the internet, social media, and Internet memes. The use of computational avatars and the rise of human language technologies, including big data and digital corpora, have made the construction of meaning and human language understanding essential to the work of linguists, cognitive scientists and computer scientists who are increasingly working together in collaborative teams to share insights.

Until the end of the 1990s, EU integration in the area of criminal law centred primarily around the regional deepening of traditional judicial cooperation in criminal matters and the development of law enforcement cooperation (including the setting up of Europol as a support agency). By the end of the 1990s respectively 2000s, the EU also gained (limited) supranational competence in the areas of substantive respectively procedural criminal law. Both judicial and law enforcement cooperation were furthered over the years via the principles of mutual recognition respectively availability, and through the setting up (and development) of Eurojust, the establishment of a European Public Prosecutor’s Office and the further development of Europol. After three decennia, the EU criminal law corpus is impressive – a core component of the EU’s ‘Area of Freedom, Security and Justice’, building on and adding to (both real and presumed) trust between the Member States. No time for stand-still, though. Since 2020, the European Commission has launched a tsunami of new legislative proposals, including in the sphere of EU criminal law, strongly framed in its new EU Security Union Strategy. This special issue on ‘EU criminal policy. Advances and challenges’ discusses and assesses some of the newest developments, both in an overarching fashion and in focused papers, relating to key 2022 novelties for Europol (ie the competence to conduct AI-based pre-analysis in (big) data sets, and extended cooperation with private parties), the sensitive debate since 2020 on criminalising (LGBTIQ) hate speech and hate crime at EU level, the 2022 Cybersecurity Directive, the potential of the 2020 Conditionality Regulation to address rule of law issues undermining the trustworthiness of Member States when issuing European Arrest Warrants, and concerns about free speech limitation by the 2021 Terrorist Content Online Regulation.
