The Kid From Armourdale

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is a story about a kid that was raised during the Great Depression when the word welfare was virtually unspoken. He had deep loyalties for God, country, and family. It was the custom in those days to salute the flag each school day. He attended weekday church school every Wednesday afternoon during his elementary school years. His family was poor but proud and self-reliant. Lloyd learned early in life that if he wanted something, he had to work for it. His loyalty to his country was reflected in his leaving high school and volunteering for the navy the day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. It’s about the struggle of two high school dropouts that fell in love. They started life together on the bottom rung, and it never occurred to them to feel sorry for themselves. They were happy in their stroll together down the rough and rocky road that lay ahead. Theirs was a love affair that lasted fifty-seven years. They were both from broken homes and determined that their children would not suffer a similar fate. It is the story of two kids willing to work hard, to study and learn, to save a penny wherever possible. It is a story of survival. They ate weeds, as some people might call them. They liked to call them spring greens. He hunted rabbit, squirrel, and quail in winter and fished during the summer. It all went into the larder. Inch by inch they elevated their lot in life, not unlike a waterlogged timber that might slowly rise to the surface and into the sunshine. They grabbed snatches of education wherever they could. Esther took typing, shorthand, and secretarial courses and later a school of cosmetology. Lloyd finished high school, took college courses, and acquired a little more than the equivalent of two years of college when the air force selected him for an engineering course at the University of Colorado. It’s about the search for Valhalla, a place and the means to retire, after a lifelong struggle by two kids so unlikely to succeed in life. Together they proved the truth of the old adage “If there is a will, there is a way.”

Kids In The Middle

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Kids in the Middle: The Micro-Politics of Special Education takes the reader on a fascinating journey through special education in the past, present, and future. On this journey, the micro-politics of special education are seen through the eyes and experiences of children with disabilities, their parents and advocates, adult educators, and school administrators. Supplementing these perspectives to develop an understanding of special education that goes beyond its administrative and political aspects, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), are scholars with expertise in special education law, administration, severe and profound disabilities, ethics, finance, teaching, and disability rights. Together, these voices explain the micro-political issues that affect how children with disabilities are educated. Kids in the Middle promotes a new model of special education to help transform special education. Instead of perpetuating a system grounded in the concepts of promises, privilege, and power, this book considers how to build a system based on caring, compassion, and the common good, a system that will elevate the status of special education children who are lost in the middle.

A Tale Told By An Idiot

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this quasi-French farce masquerading as a novel, we meet Courtney Farquhar Tremayne, one hundred years young in the year 2000 and writing his memoirs about his ten odd (and you can believe that they were exceedingly odd) years touring with a second-rate vaudeville troupe (from approximately 1926 to 1936). Meet all of the interesting characters he knew from that magical medium now long departed. There are Bud and Boz, a dog act (Bud is the trainer and Boz the dog, although it was said that some were loathe to tell the difference). Then, there is one of the strangest acts ever to be seen on the vaudeville stage, Nick Knack Paddywack and his Knockabout Kids, a family acrobatic and comedy act. Meet Malachi and Alewyn Malarkey, Irelands version of George Burns and Gracie Allen. Also on board is Charles Mammy Kaufman, a blackface minstrel singer (a type of act no longer seen on any stage) whose not-so-secret secret is that he is, contrary to the convention of the day for these mammy singers, actually black. Then, there is Kelfer Milius, the pompous star actor of the show. And lastly is the beautiful and alluring (to Courtney, anyway) Prudence Bernadette, the shows star actress. Follow them and all these other vaudeville misfits on their ten-year excursion throughout countless Midwestern cow towns and backwater hamlets, where they ply their trade and, more often than not, find themselves in sometimes precarious, yet always comic, circumstances beyond their control.
