BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Freedom and Liberty In July 1916 I published an essay under the title of 'Freedom'. Its aim was purely ethical; that is, to show that, for the purposes of human evolution, each of the two opposites, law, or organic control, and liberty, or life, was of equal importance: that there can be no continued growth of the race as a whole without an equal growth of each of these conflicting principles. Beyond this conclusion I was unable to go. I recognized that as a system my philosophy was incomplete. It failed to provide the single final end without which the deduction of ethical values is impossible. But, at the time, I had little hope of carrying the inquiry further, and I published the results, as far as they went, in a cheap form, to preserve them from oblivion. In my previous writings I had indicated that the universal final end of ethics must be found in religion, and there only. This aspect of the question, besides, has been so often and so triumphantly enforced b preceding writers that it needs not specially insisted on in this place. Though the law of England, on the subject of the press, is as servile to this day as it was in the time of the Tudors, there is little danger of its being actually put in force against political discussion, except dur ing some temporary panic, when fear of insurrection drives ministers and judges from their propriety and. The Evolution Of Modern Liberty Classic Reprint

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Liberty The study of political theories seems to be attracting considerable attention at present, a number of able writers, such as Dunning, Willoughby, Merriam. Osgood, and others having recently made contributions to this branch of research. Political theories are not only of theoretical interest, but have at times greatly influenced historical development. This is true in marked degree of those ideas whose genesis is traced in the following pages. They have been put forward repeatedly as a protest against oppression and arbitrary power. Their greatest influence, however, has made itself felt since the American Revolution. They have in large measure contributed to make our American political institutions what they are to-day. They are often spoken of as American principles. Though they did not originate in this country, they were here for the first time incorporated in the political programme of a great nation, and have been more completely realized here than in any other country. The following dissertation was begun at the suggestion of Professor Max Lenz of the University of Berlin. Freedom And Solidarity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The prevailing Western paradigm is modernity: a model focused on individual liberty, secularism, and the scientific control of nature. This worldview emerged from the break with the medieval and classical past and advanced a philosophy in which the solitary mind opposes the rest of the world. Although there is a simple appeal in this binary structure, history has shown that it is neither socially nor politically innocuous. In Freedom and Solidarity, noted political theorist and humanist Fred Dallmayr seeks to bridge the gap between the self and the outside world. Drawing on new scholarship and his work with the World Public Forum Dialogue of Civilizations, a global, nongovernmental organization of distinguished thinkers, he challenges dominant worldviews and heralds new possibilities for political thought and practice. Dallmayr argues that while we need not reject all the values of modernity, it is imperative that we resist the simplifications inherent in dualism and fundamentally reassess the notions of freedom and solidarity. Engaging a breathtaking array of influential thinkers, including Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Henry David Thoreau, Gandhi, Albert Camus, John Dewey, and Dimitry Likhachev, Dallmayr explores the possibility of a transition from the modern paradigm -- a mode of life presently in decay -- toward a new beginning in which freedom and solidarity can be reconciled, making it possible for humanity to flourish on a global scale.
