Artemis And Diana In Ancient Greece And Italy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is a collection of studies about the Greek and Roman goddesses—Artemis and Diana—who ruled creatures of the wild. Although they arose separately in Greek and Roman cultures, they were often treated as equivalent. These goddesses had the power of giving birth, health and death. Diana’s temples were built at places where three roads meet, writes Servius (ad Aen. IV.511), outside the city itself, and so they were common, safe meeting places which belonged to no one but were the sites for federal councils, hosted by the goddess. Artemis was associated in particular with bears, and Diana with deer, but both were generally associated with wild animals, as well as with the different phases of life. This volume will be useful not only for researchers on this subject, but also for courses in Greek and Roman studies, mythology, history, and women’s studies.

Ancient Women In Modern Media

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

While the role of women in western society has changed since the time of the great classical eras of Greece and Rome, the heroines of ancient myth remain just as potent to modern audiences as they were for their original creators. Regardless of genre or medium, these women of antiquity retain their power to reinforce, challenge, or outright shatter popular beliefs about the attributes, limitations, and social roles of women. This collection of eight essays examines the legacy of the heroines of antiquity in a variety of contexts, from the page to the stage to the screen, in order to understand why Helen of Troy, the Amazons, and their fellow ladies of myth have remained such vital figures today, and how they have evolved to retain and increase their stature. The contributors to this volume adopt an array of perspectives in order to do justice to the rich legacy of mythic women. These authors hail from three different continents and specialize in multiple disciplines, including Classical Studies, English, and Gender Studies. These diverse approaches make this book applicable to scholars with a wide variety of skills and interests, and ensure the topic a multifaceted treatment in the tradition of the humanities.

Roman Religion And The Cult Of Diana At Aricia

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The sanctuary dedicated to Diana at Aricia flourished from the Bronze age to the second century CE. From its archaic beginnings in the wooded crater beside the lake known as the 'mirror of Dianea' it grew into a grand Hellenistic-style complex that attracted crowds of pilgrims and the sick. Diana was also believed to confer power on leaders. This book examines the history of Diana's cult and healing sanctuary, which remained a significant and wealthy religious center for more than a thousand years. It sheds new light on Diana herself, on the use of rational as well as ritual healing in the sanctuary, on the subtle distinctions between Latin religious sensibility and the more austere Roman practice, and on the interpenetration of cult and politics in Latin and Roman history.

The Sacralization Of Space And Behavior In The Early Modern World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the Early Modern period - as both reformed and Catholic churches strove to articulate orthodox belief and conduct through texts, sermons, rituals, and images - communities grappled frequently with the connection between sacred space and behavior. The Sacralization of Space and Behavior in the Early Modern World explores individual and community involvement in the approbation, reconfiguration and regulation of sacred spaces and the behavior (both animal and human) within them. The individual’s understanding of sacred space, and consequently the behavior appropriate within it, depended on local need, group dynamics, and the dissemination of normative expectations. While these expectations were defined in a growing body of confessionalizing literature, locally and internationally traditional clerical authorities found their decisions contested, circumvented, or elaborated in order to make room for other stakeholders’ activities and needs. To clearly reveal the efforts of early modern groups to negotiate authority and the transformation of behavior with sacred space, this collection presents examples that allow the deconstruction of these tensions and the exploration of the resulting campaigns within sacred space. Based on new archival research the eleven chapters in this collection examine diverse aspects of the campaigns to transform Christian behavior within a variety of types of sacred space and through a spectrum of media. These essays give voice to the arguments, exhortations, and accusations that surrounded the activities taking place in early modern sacred space and reveal much about how people made sense of these transformations.
