The New World And The New World Order

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book re-examines the character of the USA and re-evaluates its relationship to the post-Cold War international order. The USA has often been seen as a model of democratic liberty, a vehement opponent of colonialism and the 'lone superpower' of the post-Cold War world. This book challenges all these views. Unlike previous studies of the post-Cold War role of the USA it connects US domestic affairs to systemic changes often characterized entirely in terms of the 'fall of Communism'.

The 21st Century Cold War

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The 21st Century Cold War is a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the pattern of Russian interference in the internal affairs of other nations, suggesting that what in the Cold War was a simple conflict of East vs. West has expanded into a conflict between Russia and two increasingly separate Wests. The book begins with an examination of the structure of the Cold War and post-Cold War world, and subsequently explores Russian interference by overt, grey, and covert means including, but not limited to, cyberespionage, "fake news", and the use of what in the Cold War would have been called front groups and agents of influence. The approach encompasses both historic and contemporary themes, with the question of whether the Cold War between East and West–capitalism and communism–is a thing of the past, or does it continue today in new ideological guises, as a central theme. Expert contributors explore what the motivations and implications for the pattern of Russian interference in the political processes of other states would be, and what new coalitions of actors are taking shape both for and against Russian activities. With a series of historical and contemporary case studies, focusing on the origins and contemporary dimensions of Russian information warfare, and exploring the issues involved from every perspective, The 21st Century Cold War will be of great interest to scholars of Security and Strategic Studies, International Relations, and Cold War History, as well as policy makers and security professionals. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of Terrorism and Political Violence.

The New World Order

The Rise And Fall Of The Vision Of A Post Cold War New World Order

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 2,0, University of Leicester (Department of Politics and International Relations), language: English, abstract: On September 11, 1991, George H. W. Bush outlined the main tenets of a so-called New World Order (NWO) (Bush Sr. 1991). He did this shortly before ‘Operation Desert Storm’ commenced. After 40 years of Cold War and with Communism in its last convulsions the idea of a different, more peaceful, world, without the constant threat of nuclear holocaust or material scarcity, held much sway in international politics. In order to properly account for the rise of such a vision, this essay uses the frames of ‘vindicationism’, developed by Jonathan Monten (2005) and ‘passive revolution’, developed by Antonio Gramsci. Two parts guide the discussion: 1) ‘Rise and Manifestation’; and 2) ‘Opposition and Entrenchment’. Subsections about the theoretical and cultural heritage of the NWO, as well as its introduction into the material world further point the way. It will emerge that the NWO is a US driven global initiative, based on cultural perception and logic of market expansion. With the help of the Chilean coup d’état in 1973, the concepts will be applied to a real world example and show how theory becomes practice. Chile 1973 was a key event that fostered the rise of a vision of New World Order, for it marked the beginning of applying theoretical concepts, developed especially by Chicago School economics, into the physical world. Those concepts thus still mark capitalist modernity. This section also paves the way for Part II. Contrary to observers who view power and the world in militaristic terms, this section argues that a vision of New World Order never fell. To underline this claim, examples such as al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attacks and China’s economic development are evaluated. During this exercise, it emerges that although both actors are seen as challenges to the US-centred world order, they are actually, in the case of al-Qaeda deviant, parts of it. The last section therefore concludes that the NWO is not new and firmly embedded in the structures of the global political economy.

New World Order Cold War And U S Grand Strategy Connection

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the new world order paradigm has been one of the most debated issues within academia and among political elites. Since the early 1990's, many experts and politicians, including U.S. Presidents, declared that a new world order was emerging. However, there has been neither a consensus reached, nor complex research undertaken to conceptualize this phenomenon. What would be the new world order? How would it be brought about? How would it be run? Who would benefit from it? And who would lose? It is unlikely that these complex issues can be addressed in a single brochure. Moreover, a theoretical and conceptual overview of the new world order paradigm is essential to undertake further fundamental research on the subject. Therefore, this brochure attempts to serve as a matrix for such a research and a prism through which the new world order can be examined. In doing so, it integrates major approaches of the different schools of thought. Finally, this will allow to view possible scenarios of the establishment of a system of global governance.
