From Hippocrates To Covid 19

BOOK EXCERPT:

The COVID-19 pandemic provides stark evidence of the importance of medicine on a global scale. However, revisiting the influenza pandemic of 1918 provided a perspective as we searched for a viable vaccine and instituted public health measures. This shows that medical knowledge is an accumulative process extending to the past and it is in the spirit of that legacy that this bibliography has been compiled. The book is a one-stop resource that cites literature related to the historical aspects of medicine. It also acknowledges medicine’s global reach and devotes significant effort in that respect. Although the online world seems to dominate on both a social and educational level, there is still a need for thoughtfully curated and focused reference works and this bibliography accomplishes that goal. The book has 9,000+ citations. It utilizes the WHO's International classification of Diseases for the section on diseases and disorders and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's Product Code Classification Database for the section on medical devices, equipment, and instruments. It includes detailed subject, geographuc, and people indexes for an easy reference.

Reconceptualizing Mental Illness In The Viral Age

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Reconceptualizing Mental Illness in the Viral Age: Souls in the Machine reframes the pop-culture milieu of the current state of mental illness and mental wellness in the post-COVID era. The profound psychological trauma left in the wake of the neuro-exhaustion engendered by this explosive epoch has created the perfect atmosphere, cybersphere, for another historical ‘Great Awakening’. Previously, infectious ideas infrequently led to moral and psychological upheaval. However, with mass, social, and popular media now comprising the psychosocial milieu from which emerge today’s social contagions the speed, ease, and facility with which ideas infect and commandeer the cybersphere is so profound as to be mentally devastating. Techno-psychopathologies have hyper-evolved. In an age of overwhelming distraction and irresistible technology, the one certainty amid the chaos is that the current standard of conceptualizing mental illness, through checklist diagnostics, has been outdated since the digital era began. The human mind is now fundamentally different.

Understanding The Politics Of Pandemic Emergencies In The Time Of Covid 19

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book reviews the political significance of COVID-19 in the context of earlier pandemic encounters and scares to understand the ways in which it challenges the existing individual health, domestic order, international health governance actors, and, more fundamentally, the circulation-based modus operandi of the present world order. It argues that contagious diseases should be regarded as complex open-ended phenomena with various features and are not reducible merely to biology and epidemiology. They are, as such, fundamentally politosomatic, namely that they disrupt, agitate, and trigger large-scale processes because individual somatic-level anxieties stem from individuals’ sensing immediate danger through the networks of their local and global connectedness. The author further argues that pandemics have somatic effects in political expressions that transform the epidemic into national security dramas which should not, for the sake of efficient health governance, be treated as aspects extraneous to the disease itself. The book highlights that when a serious infectious disease spreads, a 'threat' is very often externalized into a culturally meaningful 'foreign' entity. Pandemics tend to be territorialized, nationalized, ethnicized, and racialized. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of global health and governance, pandemic security, epidemics, history of medicine, geopolitics, international relations, and general readers interested in the COVID-19 pandemic.
