From Inspiration To Understanding

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The way in which we read the Bible grows out of what we believe the Bible to be. Thus it is impossible to discuss methods of interpretation without considering our view of inspiration, the gathering of the canon, and even the reception of the Bible by the community of faith. And so, Edward W. H. Vick starts this comprehensive discussion of hermeneutics—the interpretation of Scripture—by looking at what the Bible is, and what empowers its authority. He brings a lifetime of experience, teaching and writing to the task. In this examination, he takes up such diverse topics as inspiration, canonization, authority, infallibility, inerrancy, verbal inspiration, sola scriptura, tradition, myth, and many related topics. Dr. Vick always relates these elements to the overarching questions: How shall we read Scripture? How shall we understand it? How does it impact the way we live and act? There are many books on how to read the Bible, but there are few that will offer this comprehensive and systematic study. If you apply the principles you find here to your own study, you will find the scriptures opening up in new ways. Dr. Vick will help you move beyond the assumptions that often stand in the way of our personal Bible study and see the remarkable variety and power that is mediated through this book we call the Bible.

Evangelical Theories Of Biblical Inspiration

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The inspiration of the Bible is central to Christian faith, yet there is no general agreement on the nature of this inspiration. In this provocative book, Kern Robert Trembath reviews seven major evangelical explanations of inspiration and demonstrates that all either view the Bible itself as the actual recipient of inspiration or explain biblical authority on grounds more appropriate to the doctrine of God--in effect investing the Bible with characteristics that properly belong only to God. Building on the work of William Abraham, Trembath constructs his own theory of inspiration--one that regards inspiration as a tripartite concept involving the elements of initiator, means, and receiver. He insists that only a human being can be the recipient of inspiration and that the Bible must therefore be understood as the means, rather than the end, of the process. He goes on to articulate a new definition of biblical inspiration--as "a mediated enhancement of human experience by God, through the Bible"--and argues that this new understanding of inspiration is most compatible with a Thomistic doctrine of God, which insists that God's acts are mediated through the world, rather than immediately occurring in it.

Biblical truth is taught to equip the Christian and minister with significant knowledge and wisdom on over fifty topics. Many false beliefs and misconceptions are dealt with while God's Word is taught in clarity. The book shares breakthrough insight on many subjects of the Bible that are hard to understand. Also, there is significant teaching on the born-again experience, the constitution of the Christian or who we are in Christ, the baptism with the Holy Spirit, authentic worship, and much more! This is a textbook for the Christian life. Many will see it as a great source of sermons, curriculum, and position papers. The titles of the forty-four chapters should strike the interest of any God-fearing truth-loving Christian. You will not be disappointed as the Holy Spirit articulates God's will, sorts out ideas, clears away confusion, and builds solid beliefs and practice! You will see a consistency of relationship. The Bible is a unified masterpiece of truth; it's all related. Most chapters start fresh with new topics and developing themes. There are studious sections that dig deep for the purpose of benefiting everyone with greater appreciation and knowledge of God's Word while attempting to satisfy the Bible College graduate. There is much teaching today that has obscured the true meaning and application of Scripture, placed a veil over the heart of believers, and deprived Christians of its complete relevant impact upon them. Therefore, it was necessary to write a book which establishes a systematic theology based upon the full counsel of God (Acts 20:27) without imposing agendas nor being controlled by any religious group.
