Functional Analytic Methods For Evolution Equations

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book consists of five introductory contributions by leading mathematicians on the functional analytic treatment of evolutions equations. In particular the contributions deal with Markov semigroups, maximal L^p-regularity, optimal control problems for boundary and point control systems, parabolic moving boundary problems and parabolic nonautonomous evolution equations. The book is addressed to PhD students, young researchers and mathematicians doing research in one of the above topics.

Functional Analytic Methods For Partial Differential Equations

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Combining both classical and current methods of analysis, this text present discussions on the application of functional analytic methods in partial differential equations. It furnishes a simplified, self-contained proof of Agmon-Douglis-Niremberg's Lp-estimates for boundary value problems, using the theory of singular integrals and the Hilbert transform.

Evolution Equations Semigroups And Functional Analysis

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Brunello Terreni (1953-2000) was a researcher and teacher with vision and dedication. The present volume is dedicated to the memory of Brunello Terreni. His mathematical interests are reflected in 20 expository articles written by distinguished mathematicians. The unifying theme of the articles is "evolution equations and functional analysis", which is presented in various and diverse forms: parabolic equations, semigroups, stochastic evolution, optimal control, existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions, inverse problems as well as applications. Contributors: P. Acquistapace, V. Barbu, A. Briani, L. Boccardo, P. Colli Franzone, G. Da Prato, D. Donatelli, A. Favini, M. Fuhrmann, M. Grasselli, R. Illner, H. Koch, R. Labbas, H. Lange, I. Functional Analytic Methods In Complex Analysis And Applications To Partial Differential Equations

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

These proceedings concentrate on recent results in the following fields of complex analysis: complex methods for solving boundary value problems with piecewise smooth boundary data, complex methods for linear and nonlinear differential equations and systems of second order, and applications of scales of Banach spaces to initial value problems. Some problems in higher dimensions (such as the unification of global and local existence theorems for holomorphic functions and an elementary approach to Clifford analysis) are also discussed.Particular emphasis is placed on Symbolic Computation in Complex Analysis and on the new approaches to teach mathematical analysis based on interactions between complex analysis and partial differential equations.

Evolution Equations In Scales Of Banach Spaces

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The book provides a new functional-analytic approach to evolution equations by considering the abstract Cauchy problem in a scale of Banach spaces. Conditions are proved characterizing well-posedness of the linear, time-dependent Cauchy problem in scales of Banach spaces and implying local existence, uniqueness, and regularity of solutions of the quasilinear Cauchy problem. Many applications illustrate the generality of the approach. In particular, using the Fefferman-Phong inequality unifying results on parabolic and hyperbolic equations generalizing classical ones and a unified treatment of Navier-Stokes and Euler equations is described. Assuming only basic knowledge in analysis and functional analysis the book provides all mathematical tools and is aimed for students, graduates, researchers, and lecturers.

Analytic Methods For Coagulation Fragmentation Models Volume I

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Analytic Methods for Coagulation-Fragmentation Models is a two-volume set that provides a comprehensive exposition of the mathematical analysis of coagulation-fragmentation models. Initially, an in-depth survey of coagulation-fragmentation processes is presented, together with an account of relevant early results obtained on the associated model equations. These provide motivation for the subsequent detailed treatment of more up-to-date investigations which have led to significant theoretical developments on topics such as solvability and the long-term behaviour of solutions. To make the account as self-contained as possible, the mathematical tools that feature prominently in these modern treatments are introduced at appropriate places. The main theme of Volume I is the analysis of linear fragmentation models, with Volume II devoted to processes that involve the nonlinear contribution of coagulation. Features of Volume I: The main models of the theory together with their derivations and early methods of solution A detailed presentation of the operator theoretical methods and semigroup theory that play an essential role in the theory of fragmentation processes A comprehensive theory of fragmentation processes, including fragmentation with growth and decay in both the discrete and continuous particle size cases An analytical explanation of the `pathologies’ of the fragmentation equation, such as the shattering phase transition and non-uniqueness of solutions An analysis of the long-term dynamics of the discrete size fragmentation equation with growth

Floquet Theory For A Class Of Periodic Evolution Equations In An Lp Setting

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this work we explore the Floquet theory for evolution equations of the form u'(t)+A_t u(t)=0 (t real) where the operators A_t periodically depend on t and the function u takes values in a UMD Banach space X.We impose a suitable condition on the operator family (A_t) and their common domain, in particular a decay condition for certain resolvents, to obtain the central result that all exponentially bounded solutions can be described as a superposition of a fixed family of Floquet solutions.

Abstract Parabolic Evolution Equations And Their Applications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This monograph is intended to present the fundamentals of the theory of abstract parabolic evolution equations and to show how to apply to various nonlinear dif- sion equations and systems arising in science. The theory gives us a uni?ed and s- tematic treatment for concrete nonlinear diffusion models. Three main approaches are known to the abstract parabolic evolution equations, namely, the semigroup methods, the variational methods, and the methods of using operational equations. In order to keep the volume of the monograph in reasonable length, we will focus on the semigroup methods. For other two approaches, see the related references in Bibliography. The semigroup methods, which go back to the invention of the analytic se- groups in the middle of the last century, are characterized by precise formulas representing the solutions of the Cauchy problem for evolution equations. The ?tA analytic semigroup e generated by a linear operator ?A provides directly a fundamental solution to the Cauchy problem for an autonomous linear e- dU lution equation, +AU =F(t), 0
