BOOK EXCERPT:
Gay Macho presents the ethnography of this homosexual clone. Martin P. Levine, a pioneer of the sociological study of homosexuality, was among the first social scientists to map the emergence of a gay community and this new style of gay masculinity. Levine was a participant in as well as an observer of gay culture in the 1970s, and this perspective allowed him to capture the true flavor of what it was like to be a gay man before AIDS.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A major new publication in lesbian and gay studies, this accessible textbook comprises newly-commissioned essays from a rich cross-section of international scholars. The book's twenty-five chapters are organized according to the key debates in the field and are envisaged both as introductory overviews and critical reflections of each field. The chapters published here will raise debates concerning how lesbian and gay studies has contributed to and changed the identity of traditional disciplines, and shaped new areas of study such as the body, performativity and sexual politics. The contributors are experts in their field, and their essays in this essential new textbook comprise incisive and critical accounts that both summarize existing debates and point the way forward to future developments. This is a classroom text which makes ideal seminar material, and contains extensive references for further reading. Directly relevant to, and intersecting with, contemporary debates in sexuality, gender and culture, this book is highly accessible and impressively comprehensive. Sally Munt and Andy Medhurst have been teaching lesbian and gay studies for over a decade. They bring to this volume an extraordinary wealth of knowledge of their subject, and a particular capacity for producing readable and authoritative text.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This is the third issue of the journal. It brings together a selection of papers which tackle sex and sexualities from a variety of perspectives - sexual abuse, gay and lesbian sexuality, transexuality, the sexually assertive heterosexual woman and the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari. The contributors in this issue focus on the psychologization of sexuality; this is not a new topic but it is a crucial one for critical psychologists, given the regulative role of psychological practices at present. desire; Paula Reavey and Sam Warner on women survivors of child sexual abuse; Peter Emerson and Stephen Frosh on sexually abusive boys; Katrina Roen on the interpretation of transexuality as being in the wrong body; Nicola Gavey and Marion Doherty on the sexually assertive heterosexual woman; Annie Potts on the place of orgasm in the work of Deleuze and Guattari.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Gay and lesbian themes in Latin American literature have been largely ignored. This reference fills this gap by providing more than a hundred alphabetically arranged entries for Latin American authors who have treated gay or lesbian material in their works. Each entry explores the significance of gay and lesbian themes in a particular author's writings and closes with a bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The figures included have a professed gay identity, or have written on gay or lesbian themes in either a positive or negative way, or have authored works in which a gay sensibility can be identified. The volume pays particular attention to the difficulty of ascribing North American critical perspectives to Latin American authors, and studies these authors within the larger context of Latin American culture. The book includes entries for men and women, and for authors from Latin American countries as well as Latino writers from the United States. The entries are written by roughly 60 expert contributors from Latin America, the U.S., and Europe.
