This book examines the intimate relationship between race and technologies and how digital platforms reabsorb racism as an internal arrangement within its modes of technical and affective architecture. Premising the idea that technologies supplant and mirror the ‘logic’ of racialization as mimetic instruments of social control and violence, the book interrogates the present arrangement of platform capital, and its modes of re-abstraction of race into its fibres and terrains of re-territorialization of the human spheres of social, economic and political life. If capitalism reframed and consolidated racialization through its re-territorialization and primitive accumulation producing continuities from colonization and imperialism, platformization and digital capital redrafts and redistributes its racial logic in new modes of reassembling social and economic life through data, machine learning, algorithms, software designs and in tandem its automaticity. In learning, refining, and accelerating its enterprise through the mimetic violence of producing difference, racism in the digital age calibrates intimately with power, Western rationality and the ubiquity of technologies within the everyday. If the non-hominization of alterity relied on discoveries of science and its conflations with truth and White supremacy, the sustained production and oppression of the ‘inferior other’ co-opted automaticity and technologies, reiterating our fascination with and our understanding of human progress as pegged to machines, as entities working in excess of human cognition and comprehension, connecting and responding to its ambient intelligence despite its material absence. The book underpins the configuration of power and White supremacy through its co-enterprise with technologies seeks to provide an alternative and decolonial approach to technology studies particularly new media and digital technological advancements, leveraging on the notion of the digital age as an era of acceleration of difference, experimentation and the production of alterity through overt and covert modes of surveillance, image recognition software, and algorithms which work in complicity with racial capital.

This book presents multidisciplinary perspectives on opportunities and best practices necessary for empowering women in the digital economy in developing countries. The book explores the components of connectivity that matter most to women. It also helps decision-makers and policymakers to adopt the policies needed to empower women in using digital platforms and developing (and taking up) careers in the digital economy in developing economies. In response, we gathered eight contributions (or chapters) on new directions, strategies, and barriers to women’s empowerment through digital technologies. The contributions span thematic areas such as female digital entrepreneurship, social media, and agricultural value chains, women in the gig economy, the digital divide, gender disparities in cryptocurrencies, and digital access in agriculture. In précis, the contributions argue that, first, appropriate legislation matters, but it is not enough – there is a need to alter social and cultural attitudes and raise awareness. Second, there is a need to address affordability. Government and development agencies may begin by offering free or discounted smart devices to rural women and appropriate digital skills training relevant to their economic activities. Third, there is a need for urgent attention by government labor agencies in developing countries to enforce decent working conditions and protection for female gig workers while maximizing opportunities being offered through these platforms. Don’t just leave women to use digital platforms and services; support them with sound policies and programs for responsible and sustainable use. In effect, this book offers clarity on new strategies, case studies/examples, and lessons in addressing or circumventing institutional challenges to women’s empowerment through digital technologies.

Why it takes more than microloans to empower women and promote sustainable, inclusive economic growth. Nearly one billion women have been completely excluded from the formal financial system. Without even a bank account in their own names, they lack the basic services that most of us take for granted—secure ways to save money, pay bills, and get credit. Exclusion from the formal financial system means they are economic outsiders, unable to benefit from, or contribute to, economic growth. Microfinance has been hailed as an economic lifeline for women in developing countries—but, as Mary Ellen Iskenderian shows in this book, it takes more than microloans to empower women and promote sustainable, inclusive economic growth. Iskenderian, who leads a nonprofit that works to give women access to the financial system, argues that the banking industry should view these one billion “unbanked” women not as charity cases but as a business opportunity: a lucrative new market of small business owners, heads of households, and purchasers of financial products and services. Iskenderian shows how financial inclusion can be transformative for the lives of women in developing countries, describing, among other things, the informal moneylenders and savings clubs that women have relied on, the need for both financial and digital literacy (and access) as mobile phones become a means of banking, and the importance of women’s property rights. She goes on to make the business case for financial inclusion, exploring the ways that financial institutions are adapting to help women build wealth, access capital, and manage risks.
