BOOK EXCERPT:
These proceedings of a workshop presented to the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) National Cancer Policy Forum on March 30, 2007, are the result of forum discussions about genetic testing and counseling at its meetings on June 16 and October 30, 2006. Those discussions, led by forum members Betty Ferrell and Patricia Ganz, noted that genetic testing and counseling are becoming more complex and important for informing patients and families of risks and benefits of certain courses of action, and yet organized expert programs are in short supply. The subject matter involves not only the scientific and clinical aspects but also workforce and reimbursement issues, among others. Drs. Ferrell and Ganz proposed that the forum could provide a useful review of the various important implications of these issues by holding and reporting a workshop on the subject. They volunteered to work with staff to organize and lead such a workshop. The agenda for the workshop is reproduced in the appendix to these proceedings. It includes the presentations of the invited speakers and the comments of speakers, forum members, and others in attendance as transcribed and edited to eliminate redundancies, grammatical errors, and otherwise make them more readable. Cancer-Related Genetic Testing and Counseling : Workshop Proceedings summarizes the workshop.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Managing Breast Cancer Risk is a single source for information needed by primary care physicians, nurses, gynecologists, as well as oncologic specialists who deal with women who are concerned about breast cancer. Its purpose is to bring together a multidisciplinary group of experts to address breast cancer risk in a clinically meaningful way. Chapters providing detailed information on individual risk factors are accompanied by a discussion of models, which integrate multiple factors for a more complete assessment of risk. Traditional strategies for risk management, including surveillance and prophylactic surgery, are reviewed, and the data on newer techniques such as ductal lavage and screening with magnetic resonance is presented. The rational for chemoprevention with selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMS) is discussed, and the evidence for tamoxifen as a chemopreventative is updated. The potential for chemoprevention with newer SERMS and the aromatase inhibitors is reviewed. Finally, the critical (and often ignored) areas of quality of life and symptom management are addressed.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The information surveyed in this volulme is designed to provide the clinician with an expert overview of the current state of the art in breast cancer management. It should provide at least a flavor of the major paradigm shift that is occurring in this rapidly evolving field. Breast cancer management is moving away from a "kill or cure" model and advancing toward a model focused on strategies of prevention and of long-term management of breast cancer as a chronic disease. The acceptance of this new paradigm by patients and clinicians alike will represent a major focus for the twenty-first century.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in females that accounts for highest cancer specific deaths worldwide. In the last few decades research has proven that breast cancer can be treated if diagnosed at early stages and proper therapeutic strategy is adopted. Omics-based recent approaches have unveiled the molecular mechanism behind the breast tumorigenesis and aid in identification of next-generation molecular markers for early diagnosis, prognosis and even the effective targeted therapy. Significant development has taken place in the field of omics in breast cancer in the last decade. The most promising omics approaches and their outcomes in breast cancer have been presented in this book for the first time. The book covers omics technologies and budding fields such as breast cancer miRNA, lipidomics, epigenomics, proteomics, nutrigenomics, stem cell, pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine and many more along with conventional topics such as breast cancer management etc. It is a research-based reference book useful for clinician-scientists, researchers, geneticists and health care industries involved in various aspects of breast cancer. The book will also be useful for students of biomedicine, pathology and pharmacy.
