The Mount Grace area is within the Monashee Mountains in southeastern British Columbia, between the Columbia River on the east and the Seymour River on the west, approximately 60 kilometres northwest of Revelstoke. Exploration and development of the area date back to the early 1900s, with the recent work beginning in the early 1970s because of interest in niobium and rare earth elements. This bulletin presents details of the structure, stratigraphy, metamorphism and mineralization of the northwestern margin of the dome. The area was mapped in 4 weeks in the summers of 1978 and 1979, with brief subsequent visits in 1985 and 1986 concentrated on detailed mapping and sampling of the Mount Grace carbonatite and carbonatites in the Perry River area.

In Earth evolution, mountain belts are the loci of crustal growth, reworking and recycling. These crustal-scale processes are unravelled through microscale investigations of textures and mineral assemblages of metamorphic rocks. Multiple episodes of metamorphism, re-equilibration and deformation, however, generally produce a complex and tightly interwoven pattern of microstructures and assemblages. Over the last two decades, the combination of advanced computing and technological capabilities with new concepts has provided a vast array of novel petrological tools and high-resolution/high-sensitivity techniques for microanalysis and imaging. Such novel approaches are proving fundamental to untangling the enigma represented by metamorphism with an unprecedented level of detail and confidence. As a result, the first decade and a half of this century has already seen the tumultuous development of new research avenues in metamorphic petrology. This book aims to provide a timely overview of the state of the art of this field, of newly developed petrological techniques, future advancements and significant new case studies.

This report provides a tectonic and mineral deposit overview, then discusses deposits in North American rocks, followed by deposits formed in accreted and suspect' terrains; deposits formed at or near the sea floor or from hot springs; and those formed in successively deeper zones as magmatic deposits, vein to replacement deposits, skarns, and porphyries. Deposits within and directly linked to intrusive rocks (magmatic, porphyries, skarns), replacement deposits, possible manto deposits, deep to shallow veins and related deposits formed at the surface, volcanogenic massive sulphides and sedex deposits are then discussed. Sedimentary-hosted deposits of gypsum, barite, phosphate and other industrial minerals are not covered, nor are coal, uranium, pegmatite-hosted deposits, molybdenum prophyries or some of the less common deposit types such as carbonatites, tin greisens, and placers.

Skarns in British Columbia have historically been important sources of iron, tungsten, copper, and gold. This publication begins with an introduction on skarn terminology and the problems of skarn identification. It then reviews a genetic model of skarn formation and presents descriptive profiles of eight types of skarn deposits; describes the database of at least 735 skarn occurrences in the province, and the number and distribution of skarns in British Columbia according to their associations, class, age, and distribution; and notes the ages of British Columbia skarns and the total production of various metals extracted from British Columbia skarns. Subsequent sections provide information on assays and metal ratios of mineralized skarns, skarn mineralogy, skarn mineral chemistry, chemistry of skarn-related intrusions, and the mapping and evaluation of skarns. The appendix contains a listing of 735 skarn occurrences in British Columbia, giving deposit name, MINFILE number, latitude/longitude, elements and minerals present, and associated rocks and their ages.

The Fernie west-half map area straddles the southern Rocky Mountain Trench, with the Purcell Mountains on the west and the Kootenay Ranges of the Rocky Mountains on the east. This report describes the topography, location, access, and geological work conducted; the Purcell Supergroup, the Moyie sills, and Mesozoic intrusive rocks; structure and tectonics; and mineral deposits and occurrences, including lead-zinc, copper-cobalt, industrial minerals, and coal.
