Originally published in 1926, this book examines how interest in German literature in England grew immediately before and during the Romantic period.

This volume presents a selection of essays by established Italian and international scholars in the field of Romantic drama. It is divided into four main sections: 1) Dramatic Theory and Practice; 2) On the Romantic Stage: History, Arts, and Acting; 3) Interaction of Genres: from Fiction to Drama; 4) The Romantics' Debate on Theatre and Drama: a Selected Anthology. The crucial area of debate these essays address is the way in which the problem of the dramatic representation of the self becomes in Romantic drama the very centre of reflection on the constitution of the modern subject. Each essay explores one or more aspects of the formation of modern subjectivity through dramatic representation of the self and through critical enquiry into the modes of that representation. The first and the fourth sections discuss the complex interaction between the theoretical questions that animated the debate around the Romantic theatre and the multifarious and often unruly performance practices of the time. The other two sections deal with the many and diverse ways in which Romantic drama engaged with and incorporated other artistic genres such as painting, performing arts, music, and the novel.

Focusing on particular cases of Anglo-German exchange in the period known as the Sattelzeit (1750-1850), this volume of essays explores how drama and poetry played a central role in the development of British and German literary cultures. With increased numbers of people studying foreign languages, engaging in translation work, and traveling between Britain and Germany, the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries gave rise to unprecedented opportunities for intercultural encounters and transnational dialogues. While most research on Anglo-German exchange has focused on the novel, this volume seeks to reposition drama and poetry within discourses of national identity, intercultural transfer, and World Literature. The essays in the collection cohere in affirming the significance of poetry and drama as literary forms that shaped German and British cultures in the period. The essays also consider the nuanced movement of texts and ideas across genres and cultures, the formation and reception of poetic personae, and the place of illustration in cross-cultural, textual exchange.

He specialised in importing German books and German editions of the Greek and Roman classics, but soon combined his retail business with a German circulating library, the “Deutsche Lesebibliothek”. In early 1820, he was awarded a Royal Warrant as “Foreign Bookseller to His Majesty the King”. The portfolio of products and services offered by Bohte’s business included not just the importation of German books, but also an ambitious publishing programme in the fields of German and English literature, classical philology and natural history. Bohte’s regular and prolonged trips to Germany to attend the Leipzig Easter Book Fairs reflected his ambition to become a major exporter of English books to the continent too. In the words of one anonymous reviewer, Bohte was considered “a most spirited and most useful bookseller”. Although he died suddenly in London in 1824, aged only forty, he left an important legacy in both London and Leipzig. In his biography of J. H. Bohte, An Ocean of Literature, Graham Jefcoate has used a wide range of materials from collections in Britain, Germany and elsewhere to illuminate the role of the book trade in the process of Anglo-German exchange in the early nineteenth century.

The first full-length study of the main German contributors to the Gothic canon, to each of whom a chapter is devoted, The German Gothic Novel in Anglo-German Perspective is an original historical and comparative study that goes well beyond the necessary review of the evidence to include much new material, many new insights and pieces of analysis, and some fundamental changes of perspective. The book aims to put the record straight in bibliographical and literary historical terms, and to act as a reference guide to facilitate future research, so that anyone working on the German Gothic novel or on Anglo-German interactions in the field of Gothic, will find there references to all the relevant secondary literature. The German Gothic Novel in Anglo-German Perspective is addressed to Germanists, but also to teachers and students of English, American and comparative literature, for there is at present hardly a ‘hotter’ subject than Gothic. The book’s emphasis on the Gothic work of canonical writers should prompt even conservative German Departments to reconsider their attitude to Gothic. Being addressed to scholars and students of German, German quotations are given in German, but English translations are added for the convenience of English and American scholars and students of Gothic, who represent another important section of the books’ target audience.

British writers of the Romantic Period were popular in Germany throughout the nineteenth century, and translations of Scott, Burns, Moore, Hemans, and Byron (among others) became widespread. This study analyses the reception of William Wordsworth's poetry in 19th century Germany in relation to other romantic poets. Research into Anglo-German cultural relations has tended to see Wordsworth as of little or no interest to Germany but new research shows that Wordsworth was clearly of interest to German poets, translators and readers and that there was significantly more knowledge of and respect for Wordsworth's poetry, and interest in his ideas and beliefs, than has previously been recognised. Williams focuses particularly on the work of Friedrich Jacobsen, Ferdinand Freligrath and Marie Gothein, who span the early, middle, and late years of the century respectively and establishes the wider presence of many others translating, anthologising and commenting on Wordsworth poetry and beliefs.
