This volume of the Netherlands Yearbook of International Law (NYIL) is the fiftieth in the Series, which means that the NYIL has now been with us for half a century. The editors decided not to let this moment go by unnoticed, but to devote this year’s edition to an analysis of the phenomenon of yearbooks in international law. Once the decision was made that this would be the subject of this year’s NYIL, the editors asked themselves a number of questions. For instance: Not many academic disciplines have yearbooks, so what is the reason we do? What is the added value of having a yearbook alongside the abundance of international law journals, regular monographs and edited volumes that are published on a yearly basis? Does the existence of yearbooks tell us something about who we are, or who we think we are, or what we have to contribute to the world? These questions will be addressed both in a general and in a specific sense, whereby a number of yearbooks published all over the world will be looked at in further detail. The Netherlands Yearbook of International Law was first published in 1970. It offers a forum for the publication of scholarly articles in a varying thematic area of public international law.

The 2020 edition marks the 20th Anniversary of The Global Community Yearbook of International Law and Jurisprudence. The Yearbook has established itself as an authoritative source of reference on global legal issues and international jurisprudence. It includes analysis of the most significant global trends in a way that allows readers to monitor the development of the global legal order from several perspectives. The Yearbook publishes annually in a volume of carefully chosen primary source material and corresponding expert commentary. The General Editor, Professor Giuliana Ziccardi Capaldo, employs her vast expertise in international law to select excerpts from important court opinions and to choose experts from around the world to contribute essay-guides, which illuminate those cases. Although the main focus is recent case law from the major international tribunals and regional courts, the first four parts of each year's edition features expert articles by renowned scholars who address broader themes in current and future developments in international law and global policy, themes that appear throughout the case law of the many courts covered by the series as a whole. The Global Community Yearbook has thus become not just an indispensable window to recent jurisprudence: the series now also serves to prepare researchers for the issues facing emerging global law. This anniversary edition updates readers on the important work of long-standing international tribunals and introduces readers to more novel topics in international law. The journal's founding editor, Professor Emeritus Giuliana Ziccardi Capaldo, in her Editorial gives a presentation of the Yearbook's intellectual trajectory, as developed from its original roots, showing intriguing prospects for a publication that aims at the very forefront of events in law, politics, ethics, and jurisprudence in a global community. Economic sanctions are instruments of foreign policy. However, they can also affect legal relations between private parties – principally in contract. In such cases, the court or arbitration tribunal seized must decide whether to give effect to the economic sanction in question. Private international law functions as a 'filter', transmitting economic sanctions that originate in public law to the realm of private law. The aim of this book is to examine how private international law rules can influence the enforcement of economic sanctions and their related foreign policy objectives. A coherent EU foreign policy position – in addition to promoting legal certainty and predictability – would presuppose a uniform approach not only concerning the economic sanctions of the EU, but also with regard to the restrictive measures imposed by third countries. However, if we examine in detail the application of economic sanctions by Member States' courts and arbitral tribunals, we find a somewhat different picture. This book argues that this can be explained in part by the divergence of private international law approaches in the Member States.

This is the fourth volume of the "Hague Yearbook of International Law," which succeeds the Yearbook of the Association of Attenders and Alumni of the Hague Academy of International Law. The title "Hague Yearbook of International Law" reflects the close ties which have always existed between the AAA and the City of The Hague with its international law institutions and indicated the Editors' Intention to devote attention to developments taking place in those international law institutions, viz. the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal and the Hague Conference on Private International Law. This volume contains in-depth articles on these developments and summaries of (aspects of) decisions rendered by the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. In addition, the 1991 volume contains the papers of the Thirty-fourth AAA Congress held in Montreal on "Regional Economic Integration" and "Property Rights in International Law."

Launched in 1991, the Asian Yearbook of International Law is a major refereed publication dedicated to international law issues as seen primarily from an Asian perspective, under the auspices of the Foundation for the Development of International Law in Asia (DILA). It is the first publication of its kind edited by a team of leading international law scholars from across Asia. The Yearbook provides a forum for the publication of articles in the field of international law, and other Asian international law topics, written by experts from the region and elsewhere. Its aim is twofold: to promote international law in Asia, and to provide an intellectual platform for the discussion and dissemination of Asian views and practices on contemporary international legal issues. Each volume of the Yearbook normally contains articles and shorter notes; a section on State practice; an overview of Asian states participation in multilateral treaties; succinct analysis of recent international legal developments in Asia; an agora section devoted to critical perspectives on international law issues; surveys of the activities of international organizations of special relevance to Asia; and book review, bibliography and documents sections. It will be of interest to students and academics interested in international law and Asian studies.

As a rule, each volume of the "Asian Yearbook" contains Articles, Notes, State Practice, a Chronicle of Events and Incidents, United Nations Activities with Special Relevance to Asia, a Survey of Activities of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Committee, a Bibliography and a Documents section.

The Baltic Yearbook of International Law is an annual publication containing contributions on topical issues in international law and related fields that are relevant to Baltic affairs and beyond. In addition to articles on different aspects of international law, each Yearbook focuses on a theme with particular importance to the development of international law. Volume 3 contains contributions that were presented at, or inspired by, the conference entitled Reparations to States, Groups and Individuals: Implementation of State Responsibility organised on the occasion of the inauguration of the Yearbook. Undoubtedly, there are many difficult legal and political questions surrounding the implementation of the law of State responsibility and this volume addresses only some of them. The contributions disclose several fundamental questions concerning the implementation of State responsibility. Can or should the general principles of State responsibility such as the obligation of full reparation be modified when applied within a specific framework of a treaty regime? Can or should these principles be modified when a treaty embodies rights that are generally considered to have achieved the character of jus cogens norms? How to enforce the obligation of reparations between States when one of them does not recognise any such obligation? One way or another all articles published in this volume raise the issue of ways and means to ensure the compliance of States with their international obligations and their responsibility in case of violations of these obligations.
