This book examines the limits to cosmopolitan liberal peacebuilding caused by its preoccupation with the values and assumptions of neoliberal global governance. The peace people experience is determined by the processes privileged in peacebuilding. This book is about four things that shape the processes involved. First, it is a critique of orthodox postconflict peacebuilding. It takes the position that the present approach, although seemingly hegemonic, is routinely ignored or manipulated by elites and society and converted into a miasma that to some degree wastes the energies and opportunities involved. Second, it is about alternatives which invoke the kind of peace people might seek in postconflict places if they had more control over the process of peacebuilding, a notion referred to here as ‘popular peace’. It is thus not the kind of critical work that some describe as ‘reflexive anti-liberalism’. Rather, it seeks alternatives that are grounded in the lives of people in postconflict spaces and which also reflect some of the essential values of Liberalism. Third, it is about the role of both informal and formal actors, institutions and practices in the creation of such a peace. For instance, it is concerned with the legitimacy of informal practices that lie beyond Liberal tolerance and which are vital in the pursuit of everyday peace. Fourth, it is about a ‘transversal’ (rather than vertical or hierarchical) relationship of global and local governance in securing a peace that reflects the needs and values of both. In short, this work is a response to the substantial inconsistencies that appear between peacebuilding rhetoric and everyday outcomes in postconflict places. This book will be of much interest to students of peacebuilding, post-conflict statebuilding, conflict studies, global governance and International Relations in general.

Business is Global: Interrelations in global bargaining power frameworks became shifted by the impact of global governance nowadays. The whole world is linked through internet based operations, financial markets, global problems, governmental alliances and business relations. Understanding this complexity is essential for multinational companies to succeed in the competitive environment: The Global Business. But also for the other player within the dynamic framework of global bargaining power it is important to understand the mechanism of interrelations and dependencies. This literature deals with the four main groups that build up together the Global Governance framework: National Governments, Trans-National Companies, Civil Society and International Organizations. Indeed, it takes the Trans-National Companies (TNC) into focus and explains the mechanisms that have impact on their bargaining power. As theoretical basis the Porters five forces model was taken in order to reconstruct the competitive environment. Later this model becomes modified and added by a sixth source, based on the studies of Aidan R. Vining. In the end the Hirschmann?'s "Voice and Exit Theory" is used to indicate the possible strategies to react on given global constellations. Each source and its impact on the bargaining power framework are analyzed explicit. In a second step the interrelations and mutual reactions are taken into focus. Last but not least this literature shows up options for TNC to conquer the mechanism, gain competitive advantage and increase bargaining power that leads to higher revenue in a business related sense.

This book analyses the status and prospects of the global governance of Access Benefit Sharing (ABS) in the aftermath of 2010’s Nagoya Protocol to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The CBD’s initial 1992 framework of global ABS governance established the objective of sharing the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources fairly between countries and communities. Since then, ABS has been a contested issue in international politics – not least due to the failure of effective implementation of the original CBD framework. The Nagoya Protocol therefore aims to improve and enhance this framework. Compared to the slow rate of progress on climate change, it has been considered a major achievement of global environmental governance, but it has also been coined a ‘masterpiece of ambiguity’. This book analyses the role of a variety of actors in the emergence of the Nagoya Protocol and provides an up-to-date assessment of the core features of the architecture of global ABS governance. This book offers a central resource regarding ABS governance for those working on and interested in global environmental governance. This is achieved by focusing on two broad themes of the wider research agenda on global environmental governance, namely architecture and agency. Furthermore, individual chapter contributions relate and link ABS governance to other prominent debates in the field, such as institutional complexes, compliance, market-based approaches, EU leadership, the role of small states, the role of non-state actors and more. Partly due to its seeming technical complexity, ABS governance has so far not been at the centre of attention of scholars and practitioners of global environmental governance.
