A history of women in the Western world

A collection of essays by many distinguished contributors, focused on the portrayal of rebel women in ancient Greek drama. Ancient Greek drama provides the modern stage with a host of powerful female characters who stand in opposition to the patriarchal structures that seek to limit and define them. For contemporary theatre directors their representation serves as a vehicle for examining and illuminating issues of gender, power, family and morality, as germane today as when the plays were first written. Rebel Women brings together essays by leading writers from across different disciplines examining the representation of ancient Greek heroines in their original contexts and on today's stage. Divided into three sections, it considers in turn international productions, Irish versions, and studies of the original texts. This study analyses the legal condition of women in Catalonia, Spain, in the early modern ages, particularly during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, by way of the study of primary legal sources. The legal discourse was conceived as being different for men and women: women were treated as a specific social category, were judicially discriminated against and were given inferior legal personality. Following the moral discourse of the time, jurists classified women as honest and dishonest, and tried to establish a physical and legal barrier to divide the good from the bad. As a result, women were before the law, pawns for male decisions. However, women did not easily comply with the submissive role attributed to them and, as civil lawsuits show, often they used the law that discriminated them in their own benefit.

Exploring the major historiographical, theoretical, and methodological approaches that have shaped studies on slavery, this addition to the Writing History series highlights the varied ways that historians have approached the fluid and complex systems of human bondage, domination, and exploitation that have developed in societies across the world. The first part examines more recent attempts to place slavery in a global context, touching on contexts such as religion, empire, and capitalism. In its second part, the book looks closely at the key themes and methods that emerge as historians reckon with the dynamics of historical slavery. These range from politics, economics and quantitative analyses, to race and gender, to pyschohistory, history from below, and many more. Throughout, examples of slavery and its impact are considered across time and place: in Ancient Greece and Rome, Medieval Europe, colonial Asia, Africa, and the Americas, and trades throughout the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Eburne brings readers on an adventure in intellectual history that stresses the urgency of taking seriously—especially in an era of fake news—ideas that might otherwise be discarded or regarded as errant, unfashionable, or even unreasonable. Examining the role of such thinking in contemporary intellectual history, Eburne challenges the categorical demarcation of good ideas from flawed, wild, or bad ones, addressing the surprising extent to which speculative inquiry extends beyond the work of professional intellectuals to include that of nonprofessionals as well, whether amateurs, unfashionable observers, or the clinically insane. Considering the work of a variety of such figures—from popular occult writers and gnostics to so-called outsider artists and pseudoscientists—Eburne argues that an understanding of its circulation and recirculation is indispensable to the history of ideas. The subject of women’s roles throughout history has been extensively debated, with each era bringing forth its own interpretation of what it means to be a woman. This book, Women Through Time: Re-evaluating Ancient, Traditional, Modern, and Contemporary Feminine Ideals, dares to question the prevailing assumption that the most recent forms of womanhood are necessarily the most liberating or empowered. Instead, this work examines the evolution of women’s roles across four major historical periods—ancient, traditional, modern, and contemporary—and challenges the reader to consider which era truly offered women the greatest sense of fulfillment, purpose, and societal value. The inspiration for this book arose from a growing dissatisfaction with mainstream narratives that often dismiss traditional and ancient forms of womanhood as merely repressive or regressive. Modern discussions of gender equality and empowerment tend to overlook the nuanced ways women have historically wielded power, influenced culture, and shaped their communities. My goal with this book is not to diminish the achievements of modern women’s rights movements, but to reframe the conversation around what it means to live as a "successful" woman in society. Through detailed analysis, this work aims to give fair consideration to each form of womanhood, be it as an ancient priestess, a traditional homemaker, a modern feminist, or a contemporary activist.
