Golden Nuggets

BOOK EXCERPT:

When gold was discovered on the Fraser River, the rush was on. By early spring of 1858 the need for shelter, food, rest stops and stores became very apparent, as miners and would-be-miners made their way up into the hinterland. From Yale to Barkerville, roadhouses sprung up along the Cariboo's gold-rush trail. From their crude beginning, the roadhouses soon grew to be more than just stopovers. The roadhouses are gone, but the communities, villages, towns and cities remain. Golden Nuggets, with pictures and written text, brings the roadhouses back to life and gives us a glimpse of yesterday.

Golden Nuggets From The Mountains

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The late 1920' and early 1930's was the time of the Great Depression. Little or no work was available so people could earn money for survival. All mountain families grew vegetables, kept a milk cow and raised some hogs. Those who owned their mountain farms lived well by working hard and managing well. They cut timber to sell and earn a little money necessary for clothing and other things they couldn't grow. It was widely known that gold had been found in the mountains. Men would put in endless hours panning for gold in the small mountain streams. Now and then, someone would find a gold nugget. Most of the time, it would be the size of a pea or maybe the size of a marble. Gold was a symbol of wealth. When someone found a nugget and word got around, everyone would be talking about Uncle Ben striking it rich. However, I never knew of anyone selling his gold for a pile of money. One day, I realized that gold nuggets were not only present in these mountains, but that there were golden nuggets in the experiences of my life in these mountains. It is with great joy that I share these stories with anyone who cares to read them. Fred Lunsford

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Golden Nugget “Matilda’s Night Out and the Fortune Teller” is a fun short fiction story meant to offer its readers a bit of adventure and enjoyment. The story is a contemporary urban fairy tale that is bestowed upon the story characters by requiring that they each use “magical realism,” which is needed in order to create positive change and which arrives by way of encouragement of a warm, very likeable well-traveled experienced fortune teller. Unlike Cinderella, the magic of the fairy tale continues on into the everyday world in which the characters live. An unexpected special occasion and night out results in all having a fun time and a welcome surprise. The story identifies the significance of past, ancient story tales of many world cultures, which still influence us today for positive good. Folklore and foxfire used in past tradition is known today as contemporary folk magic, which gives each of us a bit of stardust and offers each of us hope today in understanding why superstitions, personal beliefs, good versus evil, the powers of “magical realism,” positive thought and one’s belief in self-magic reveal how folktales intend to heal the human spirit and instill one’s belief in both natural and self-magic. The purpose of the book is to encourage each of us to appreciate the true meaning of the first gypsy legends, who were the first trendsetter pioneers and human legends, whom both established and carried on enjoyable American traditions. The book encourages each of us to “never stop believing in the magic.” If you know of at least three superstitions you personally believe in or know of just for fun and know of a few special fairy tales, you should enjoy this book.

How Reliable Is Your Product

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Traditionally, the way to test a product's reliability was to build it--and then try to break it. As systems and technologies improved, TAAF (Test, Analyze and Fix) methodologies were developed and adopted. In today's global economy, with its short, technologically-intense product life cycles, TAAF cannot suffice. Reliability can no longer be a step or a series of steps in product development; it is something that needs to be acknowledged up front and built into the product from its very conception. Reliability, in other words, must be 'designed in.' Product developers now have many tools--software and hardware--at their disposal for building reliability in from the get go. From the organizational point of view, what better way to design in reliability than to make designers themselves responsible for the reliability of their designs? As "Mike Silverman" explains in "How Reliable is Your Product?," this is why the role of the reliability engineer is changing to one of mentor. Product developers are now responsible for going out and finding the best testing tools and then training the designers on their use, so that designers factor and build in reliability at every stage of product design. Mike has focused on reliability throughout his 25-year career, and has observed the position of reliability in the organization evolve. In this book, he condenses his expertise and experience into a volume of immense practical worth to the engineering and engineering management communities including designers, manufacturing engineers and reliability/quality engineers. Among other things, Mike discusses how reliability fits, or should fit, within the product design cycle. He provides a high-level overview of reliability techniques available to engineers today. He lucidly discusses the design of experiments and the role of failure management. With case studies and narratives from personal experience, Mike discusses optimal ways to utilize different reliability techniques. He highlights common errors of judgment, missteps and sub-optimal decisions that are often made within organizations on the path to total reliability. With"How Reliable is Your Product?" "Mike Silverman" has delivered what few have done before--a comprehensive yet succinct overview of the field of reliability engineering and testing. Engineers and engineering managers will find much in this book of immediate, practical value.
