Studies In The History Of The English Language V

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This collection of essays focuses on current approaches to variation and change in historical English grammar and lexicon. Of the twelve papers in the collection, half are based on grammar and syntax, half on lexical developments. The volume highlights the contributions that strong empirical research can make to our knowledge of the development of English grammar, especially as realized in lexical development. In illustration of contemporary research trends, the articles in the collection make strong use of extralinguistic factors to discuss language change as well as argue for internal and structural development. The authors are drawn from nine different countries, and each article is followed by a commentary and response that provide actual dialogue about the issues in the field, thus representing world-wide discussion of issues in the history of English. The essays recognize the different audiences for historical variation and change - formal linguists, sociolinguists, and lexicographers - and specifically address the interests and discourse in those areas. The volume shows how historical studies of English are increasingly engaged with contemporary trends in linguistics, at the same time as demonstrating how empirical and other methods can bring classical philology fully into the sphere of contemporary linguistics without abandoning its traditional concerns.

Corpus Approaches To Grammaticalization In English

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Grammaticalization is an important concept in general and typological linguistics and a prominent type of explanation in historical linguistics. For historical corpus linguists, grammaticalization theory provides a frame of orientation in their effort to analyze and systematize a fast-accumulating mass of data. Students of grammaticalization have become increasingly aware of the potential of existing corpora and established corpus-linguistic methodology for their work. This book continues and develops the dialogue between the two fields. All the contributions are based on extensive use of various electronic corpora. Relating corpus practices to recent theoretical concerns of grammaticalization studies they deal with grammaticalization and historical sociolinguistics, lexicalization and grammaticalization, layering, frequency, grammaticalization and dialects, degrammaticalization and grammaticalization in a contrastive perspective. The papers show that a synthesis of corpus methodology and grammaticalization studies leads to new and interesting insights about the mechanisms of language change and the communicative functions of language.

Institutionalizing English Literature

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"This book has a dual purpose. First, it presents a detailed historical record of how the academic discipline of English literary study began in British universities. It traces the process of academic legitimation and autonomy from Adam Smith, who first offered formal university lectures on English literature, between 1748 and 1751, to the formation of the Oxford English School by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1904." "Much of this material is drawn directly from the lives and careers of the prominent professors who were the avatars of the new discipline. The author examines pedagogical practices, programmatic decisions, and shifting political currents of academic fashion. The primary focus is on two institutions, the University of Edinburgh and University College, London. Not only were they in the forefront in the initial disciplinary formation of English literary study, they were both especially sensitive registers of continually changing ideological imperatives and scholarly trends." "The second purpose of the book is to demonstrate, to those who consider the politicization of literary study a contemporary plague, that political ideologies and ethnocentric parochialism have consistently determined the historical development of the discipline, and that the institutional history of English literary study is largely a history of ideological and racial controversy. Though basically historical in its methodology, the book extends into areas of general literary criticism and cultural theory, examining how an interdisciplinary network of relations created the political climates and shaped the scholarly trends that determined the discipline's history." "The record of the genesis of English literary study is in part a record of major institutional commitments, of the publication of definitive critical works, of the shaping of a teachable canon of literary works, and of the vibrant and colorful personalities who left their marks on generations of students. But as this book shows, the full record also includes other traces of the past: salary disputes, professional jealousies and conflicts, conflicting pedagogical visions, British racial distinctions, economic constraints, the marketing of books, committee bureaucracies, degree requirements, political demagoguery, social and religious pressures, and many others."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Grammar Of Spoken And Written English

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The completely redesigned Grammar of Spoken and Written English is a comprehensive corpus-based reference grammar. GSWE describes the structural characteristics of grammatical constructions in English, as do other reference grammars. But GSWE is unique in that it gives equal attention to describing the patterns of language use for each grammatical feature, based on empirical analyses of grammatical patterns in a 40-million-word corpus of spoken and written registers. Grammar-in-use is characterized by three inter-related kinds of information: frequency of grammatical features in spoken and written registers, frequencies of the most common lexico-grammatical patterns, and analysis of the discourse factors influencing choices among related grammatical features. GSWE includes over 350 tables and figures highlighting the results of corpus-based investigations. Throughout the book, authentic examples illustrate all research findings. The empirical descriptions document the lexico-grammatical features that are especially common in face-to-face-conversation compared to those that are especially common in academic writing. Analyses of fiction and newspaper articles are included as further benchmarks of language use. GSWE contains over 6,000 authentic examples from these four registers, illustrating the range of lexico-grammatical features in real-world speech and writing. In addition, comparisons between British and American English reveal specific regional differences. Now completely redesigned and available in an electronic edition, the Grammar of Spoken and Written English remains a unique and indispensable reference work for researchers, language teachers, and students alike.

Wh Clauses In English

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This study provides the first description-oriented, theoretically-unaligned account ofwh-clauses in Modern English. The author employs a data-based approach to examine aspects of both generative and non-generative work as regards their relative strengths and weaknesses. Wh-clauses in English: Aspects of Theory and Description is a unique combination of statistical findings and qualitative analysis. It is not only underpinned by a systematic investigation of the Brown University corpus but also includes attested material from other sources such as the British National Corpus, the CobuildDirect corpus as well as material gleaned from the internet. The qualitative and quantitative analyses are combined to approach a wide range of theoretical and descriptive issues, such as wh-movement, landing-sites for moved wh-XPs, vacuous movement, island constraints, among others. Not insignificantly, many questions of indeterminacy are addressed, such as the interface of conjunctions and relative words, the problems of demarcation between interrogatives and free relatives as well as structural ambiguities between interrogatives and exclamatives.
