Beginning with the emergence of the Aegean dispute in 1973 and ending with the most comprehensive attempt to date to solve the Greek–Turkish conflict in the wake of the Davos rapprochement process in 1988. The analysis in this book goes back to developments that occurred in the first half of the 20th century.

This book mainly focuses on the Cyprus question as a pivotal issue of Turkish foreign policy and Turkish-American relations. The Cyprus question was a constant factor in US-Turkish relations in the past and it still conditions the Turkish-American alliance, which is an important element of the present international relations. The period covered in this book is from 1960-1975. After experiencing a perfect honeymoon period in the 1950s, the durability, strength and cohesion of the US-Turkish alliance were tested by severe problems between 1960 and 1975. At the core of all the problems was there the Cyprus question, affecting the general tendency of the relationship between the two countries and the attitude of policy-makers of both states. Finally, the period covering from 1974 onward up to the present is generally studied with particular emphasis on Turkish-American relations and a supplementary chapter at the end of the book gives the latest developments from the Turkish point of view.

Although the work will focus on the 1945–1991 period, it will explore the roots of the conflict, starting with the formation of the Soviet state, and its legacy to the present day.

This publication shows that the Eastern Mediterranean, having been transformed from a region of secondary importance during the Cold War to one of greater importance for the western interests in the post-Cold War era, is in a state of flux. Despite sporadic periods of rapprochement, tensions between Greece and Turkey still exist. Therefore, one must question the grounds behind the lack of normal relations that exist between these two NATO members and its effects on the NATO organisation as a whole. Hence, this volume has two purposes first, to examine Greek and Turkish foreign, security and defence policies during and after the post-Cold War period and second, to investigate why these policies have been formulated.

During the Cold War era, relations between Greece and Turkey attracted the interest of the two superpowers, affected the objectives of the European Community and NATO and were regularly discussed within United Nations channels. Whereas existing studies on Greco-Turkish relations tend to focus on the various disputes between the two states of the Eastern Mediterranean and illustrate how continuous antagonism and aggression have dominated their interstate affairs, 'Greece and the American Embrace: Greek Foreign Policy Towards Turkey, the US and the Western Alliance' concentrates on the prospect of foreign intervention during the Cold War and considers the events and facts that brought about the conflict in the first place. Although a significant number of studies imply, or clearly support, the potential for foreign interference in Greece's domestic political environment and external affairs and the related conspiracy theories, few have exclusively concentrated their interest in exploring these allegations. Greece's relations with external powers constituted colourful events in contemporary history and became determining factors in the formation of Greek foreign policy. In fact, the assumption that the role of external powers was highly influential granted all the omnipresent advocates of 'conspiracy theories' a unique opportunity to call for Greece's disengagement from the western camp. Kassimeris makes extensive use of all relevant documentation to challenge the issue of 'foreign intervention' and the ways in which it encouraged speculation with regard to the objectives of Greek foreign policy, while also undermining the relationship between Greece and her western allies. Previously unpublished sources from the Congressional Reports, Karamanlis Archives, National Security Study Memorandums, Greek Parliamentary Proceedings, UN Resolutions and the US Department of State Documents are also included.
