BOOK EXCERPT:

Groundwater Modeling Utilities is a handy reference guide designed to help groundwater industry professionals learn to use a variety of microcomputer software applications for groundwater modeling and numerical modeling in flow and contaminant migration studies. The book provides the following: (1) handy operation and logic reference supplements to selected groundwater model, pre-processor, post-processor, geostatistics, graphics, CAD, and word processing software supporting documentation; (2) selected model operation practice exercises with extensive step by step input/option prompt and response documentation; and (3) six convenient model database manipulation utility programs stored on two 5-1/4" diskettes included with this book. The disks can be used with all IBM and IBM-compatible computers. The utility programs allow you to convert values from one system of units to another; interpolate between control data points on a curve or surface; calculate heads and partial penetration effects in production wells; create, edit, and convert grid, triplet, listed, and unformatted model data files; and view tabular and category displays of model data files. Groundwater Modeling Utilities covers some of the most popular and thoroughly tested public domain finite-difference numerical microcomputer model software; commercial model software; public domain geostatistics software; and commercial graphics, CAD, and word processing software. Using actual groundwater modeling-specific examples, learn to work with software such as MODFLOW, MOD PATH, MOC, INTERTRANS, INTERSAT, GEOPACK, GRAPHER, SURFER, CADD 5.0, and WordPerfect 5.1. Groundwater Modeling Utilities is a book no groundwater industry professional can afford to be without.

Designing Groundwater Models With Windows

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book explains how to design a groundwater model using the accompanying customized DesignMod software. DesignMod does not require a digitizer, but instead uses the mouse and rich graphical features of the Windows environment. It enables the user to draw and redraw easily and quickly cross sections and plan views with site base map information, contour, and zonation pattern overlays. Discretization, aggregation, averaging, and approximation guidelines for designing groundwater models with DesignMod are provided as a handy reference. DesignMod also can be used to manipulate and view model database array files. Many exercises with step-by-step program operation documentation are provided for beginning and intermediate modelers.

Climate Change And Groundwater Planning And Adaptations For A Changing And Uncertain Future

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book attempts to bridge the gap between the climate change research and decision-making communities by exploring the impacts of climate change on groundwater from a more applied perspective. Global climate change will impact groundwater demands, quality, and available supplies, and rising sea level may cause water tables to rise, inundating low-lying coastal areas. Groundwater will increasingly be needed to perform a stabilization role in mitigating fluctuations in the supply of surface waters, serving as a buffer against droughts. Climate change has become a frequent subject in the mass media, and the academic literature on the subject is now enormous. An impediment to climate change adaptation with respect to water is a poor link between the climate change research community and the actual decision-makers responsible for water supply planning. Key issues explored are methods for evaluating potential impacts on climate change on local groundwater systems, the adaptation of decision-making process, and how climate change adaptation can be mainstreamed into the water supply planning.

Characterizing Groundwater Recharge

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The purpose of the project was to demonstrate the value of age-dating and isotopic tracers in characterizing the flow dynamics and water quality changes in a complex groundwater domain that includes high capacity municipal pumping wells, a geologic fault, and artificial recharge facilities with deep lake-like recharge ponds. Characterizing water quality changes during recharge and transport in groundwater was also an objective of this investigation. Below (west of) the Hayward Fault (BHF), water ages correlated well with aquifer layer sequence. BHF tracers did not reach the BHF wellfield within the time frame of the experiment. Above (east of) the fault, (AHF) tracers reached the targeted wellfield in only 60 days, indicating substantial heterogeneity and a fast travel time along preferential pathways compared to the average travel time of 2+ years indicated by age-dating and more classical estimating methods. A reconnaissance of water quality, conducted concurrently with the tracer studies, suggested certain water quality improvements occurring in either the pond sediment or the near-pond aquifer media. Variations in groundwater age depended on location and depth. A survey of natural isotopes indicated mixing of young and older water in wells, increasing age with depth of aquifer layer, and possible dissolution of carbonate minerals. AHF tracer experiments, along with other analysis, suggested that tracers probably percolated preferentially at shallow depths in the pond near the shoreline. Much of the tracer remained in deep pond water over time, increasing residence time in down-gradient wells. The tracer studies provided evidence of preferential pathways and heterogeneity in the AHF aquifer and a fast minimum travel time to the AHF wellfield. The tracer added to BHF ponds was detected in just two monitoring wells, but not at the BHF wellfield over the 10-month period. An AHF tracer from a small pond spanning the fault did, however, appear at the BHF wellfield. BHF pond water flows mainly to distal portions of the groundwater basin, or reaches the wellfield over a slow, circuitous route. Resources And References

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This guide book provides references and resources for the complex field of hazardous waste and hazardous materials management. The book is divided into general topics such as air quality, industrial wastewater, pollution prevention, and risk assessment under hazardous waste management and chemical hazards, emergency planning, and hazard communication under hazardous materials management. Each individual section includes a list of annotated bibliographies of the most recent books by major publishers as well as established, standard references. Following the annotated titles, are additional references of books and documents by publishers, technical associations, and governmental agencies (primarily the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). In general, only references from 1986 onward are included since the technology and regulations affecting hazardous waste and materials are constantly evolving.Additional resources included in the book are video tapes for training and instruction, information services and databases, libraries, agency contacts, technical journals, and a list of publishers and ordering information. This book will be a useful reference to professionals in the environmental field who need an extensive, but concise source of technical information and contacts. The book will be a valuable addition to individual libraries and will fill a current reference void in university libraries, and technical libraries in industry and government. At present there are very few technical bibliographies in the field, and none has covered topics related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste as extensively as this book.
