Ring theorists and researchers in invariant theory and operator algebra met at Bowdoin for the 1984 AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference to exchange ideas about group actions on rings. This book deals with some aspects of linear techniques in combinatorial group theory having their origin in the work of Wilhelm Magnus in the 1930s. The central theme is the identification and properties of those subgroups of free groups which are induced by certain ideals of the integral group rings of free groups. This subject has been developed extensively, and the author seeks to present, in contemporary style, a systematic and comprehensive account of some of its developments. Included in the book are a solution of the Fox subgroup problem and an up-to-date development of the dimension subgroup problem. Aimed at graduate students and researchers in combinatorial group theory, the book requires a familiarity with the general terminology of free groups and group rings.

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Groups, Rings, Group Rings, and Hopf Algebras, held October 2–4, 2015 at Loyola University, Chicago, IL, and the AMS Special Session on Groups, Rings, Group Rings, and Hopf Algebras, held October 3–4, 2015, at Loyola University, Chicago, IL. Both conferences were held in honor of Donald S. Passman's 75th Birthday. Centered in the area of group rings and algebras, this volume contains a mixture of cutting edge research topics in group theory, ring theory, algebras and their representations, Hopf algebras and quantum groups.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest and activity in the area of group actions on affine and projective algebraic varieties. Tech niques from various branches of mathematics have been important for this study, especially those coming from the well-developed theory of smooth compact transformation groups. It was timely to have an interdisciplinary meeting on these topics. We organized the conference "Topological Methods in Alg~braic Transformation Groups," which was held at Rutgers University, 4-8 April, 1988. Our aim was to facilitate an exchange of ideas and techniques among mathematicians studying compact smooth transformation groups, alge braic transformation groups and related issues in algebraic and analytic geometry. The meeting was well attended, and these Proceedings offer a larger audience the opportunity to benefit from the excellent survey and specialized talks presented. The main topics concerned various as pects of group actions, algebraic quotients, homogeneous spaces and their compactifications. The meeting was made possible by support from Rutgers University and the National Science Foundation. We express our deep appreciation for this support. We also thank Annette Neuen for her assistance with the technical preparation of these Proceedings.

Motivated by some notorious open problems, such as the Jacobian conjecture and the tame generators problem, the subject of polynomial automorphisms has become a rapidly growing field of interest. This book, the first in the field, collects many of the results scattered throughout the literature. It introduces the reader to a fascinating subject and brings him to the forefront of research in this area. Some of the topics treated are invertibility criteria, face polynomials, the tame generators problem, the cancellation problem, exotic spaces, DNA for polynomial automorphisms, the Abhyankar-Moh theorem, stabilization methods, dynamical systems, the Markus-Yamabe conjecture, group actions, Hilbert's 14th problem, various linearization problems and the Jacobian conjecture. The work is essentially self-contained and aimed at the level of beginning graduate students. Exercises are included at the end of each section. At the end of the book there are appendices to cover used material from algebra, algebraic geometry, D-modules and Gröbner basis theory. A long list of ''strong'' examples and an extensive bibliography conclude the book.

Lie groups has been an increasing area of focus and rich research since the middle of the 20th century. This volume includes the proceedings of a workshop on Invariant Theory held at Queen's University (Ontario). The workshop was part of the theme year held under the auspices of the Centre de recherches mathematiques (CRM) in Montreal. The gathering brought together two communities of researchers: those working in characteristic 0 and those working in positive characteristic. The book contains three types of papers: survey articles providing introductions to computational invarianttheory, modular invariant theory of finite groups, and the invariant theory of Lie groups; expository works recounting recent research in these three areas and beyond; and open problems of current interest. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers working in invarianttheory.
