Ethical Responses To Nature S Call

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Arguing for a renewed view of objects and nature, Ethical Responses to Nature’s Call considers how it is possible to understand our ethical duties - in the form of ethical intuitionalism - to nature and the planet by listening to and releasing ourselves over to the call or address of nature. Blending several strands of philosophical thought, such as Graham Harman’s Object-Oriented Ontology, W. D. Ross’s prima fathics, Alphonso Lingis’s phenomenological ethics traceable to The Imperative, and Michael Bonnett’s ecophilosophy, this book offers a unique rejoinder to the problems and issues that continue to haunt humans’ relationship to nature. The origins of such problems and issues largely remain obscured from view due to the oppressive influence of the "Cultural Framework" which gives form and structure to the ways we understand, discourse on, and comport ourselves in relation to the natural world. Through understanding this "Cultural Framework" we also come to know the responses we continue to offer in answer to nature’s call and address, and are then in a position to analyze and assess those responses in terms of their potential ethical weight. Such a phenomenon is made possible through the descriptive-and-interpretive method of eco-phenomenology. This renewed vision of the human-and-nature provides direction for our interaction with and behavior toward nature in such a way that the ethical insight offers a diagnosis and provides a potentially compelling prescriptive for environmental ills.

Understanding United States Government Growth

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Understanding United States Government Growth develops and tests alternative explanations of government growth since World War II. It opens with an analysis of debate about the causes and consequences of government growth, including the excessive government view that the public sector has grown beyond the scope demanded by citizens due to its own structural defects, and the responsive interpretation that government has gown because it has reacted appropriately to external public demands. The authors review the major political and economic explanations for government growth and criticize earlier empirical attempts to test these explanations. In the second half of the book, they distinguish four components of government growth: growth in the cost of government and growth in the scope of government activities in three domains--transfer payments, domestic purchases, and defense purchases. Both responsive and excessive explanations of each of these components of growth are developed and tested to allow an evaluation of the validity of the two contrasting views about big government.

Venuses Penuses

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

John Money is regarded by many of his contemporaries as the most original theoretical voice in sexology today. In part, this is due to the scope of his three decades' work as a theoretician, researcher, applied clinician, and academic and public educator. The various chapters of Venuses Penuses bring the reader up to date on a wide range of topics of contemporary interest, including childhood sexuality, male/female erotosexual differences, premenstrual tension, sexuality and aging, treatment of sex offenders, and teenage pregnancy. Several chapters, such as "The Development of Sexuality and Eroticism in Humankind," are already used as texts by sex educators, therapists, and counselors across the country. Gathered together in Venuses Penuses (pronounced Venoos'es Penoos'es) are early papers on the psychology of hermaphroditism, in which the concept of gender first entered modern psychology and social-science usage; the genesis of gender transposition as manifest in homosexuality, bisexuality, gynemimesis, and transexualism; the theory of paraphilic (unusual, often socially unacceptable) sex; and Money's original concepts of lovemaps, the mental templates of the love object and the love process.
